"Los Angeles is in fifth place in the Western Conference, but can't get any higher -- and the Clips have only inner motivation to finish strong in their final 10 games, since falling to sixth might be much better for their chances of going far in the playoffs.

The West's fifth-place team probably will play powerful Dallas or San Antonio in the first round -- but the sixth-place finishers probably will get a matchup with the Denver Nuggets, whose 41-33 record isn't even as good as the Clippers' 42-30 mark. Memphis is in sixth, just one game behind the Clippers."

The above means that the Clippers have an incentive to let their record wither beyond MEM's a bit in order to be the sixth seed playing DEN in the opening round rather than SAS or DAL.

LAC also has a brutal schedule the remainder of the month with key players hurting. Wouldn't surprise if their record takes a bit of a hit. That'll be good for the NETS holding LAC's 1st round pick this summer.

So root for MEM to keep losing. The more they lose, the more LAC'll have to lose. Of course, root for LAC to drop a few games in the standing too! It wouldn't bother me if they closed 42-40.

This doesn't make sense at all...

First, LAC is in 4th, not 5th.

The Wests 5th place team will face the 4th place team which will DEFINATELY not be San Antonio or Dallas as they're ranked 1st and 2nd respectively.

Denver is in the 6th place spot. Memphis is in the 5th spot.

Guess you'll just have to take it up with ESPN.

I guess they mean by the standings? They have the 4th best record in the West, but because of the way the standings work, they'd be in 5th in the playoffs.

Spurs are number 1, suns are 2, nuggets are 3, just because they win their divisions...and mavs get 4th even though they have the second best record.

Oh...guh. Was looking at ESPN and they don't update their conference standings that way.

Seeds 1-3 are reserved in order of best to worst for the 3 division winners.

Then you can consider the 4-8 seeds as the at larges or best records not division winners. Looks like that will be the 2nd place finisher in the southwest(Dallas or San Antonio). You're better off avoiding the 5th seed if at all possible. Playing Denver gives you a chance to advance.

Here's some interesting stuff from the Daily Dime and ESPN on the playoff seedings. Note what they're saying about MEM and LAC. Playoff formats may eventually be changed given current dis-incentives to perform well.

Shot clock running down

Heck, if LAC and MEM go at it, maybe NJN's pick'd be even higher.
