The best guitar solo I ever heard was Eruption by Van Halen. Eddie goes all out on that one.

I never seen it live though

I love Joe Satriani's "Always With You, Always With Me" (or is it the other way around? LOL

It's just emotion at it's best. ;)

Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing (outro)
Audioslave - Like a Stone
Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train, Mr. Crowley (RR)
Van Halen - Eruption
Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
G'NR - Sweet Child 'o Mine
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (not technically, but Kurt was so dynamic)
Allman Bros. - Statesboro Blues

There ya have it. Some of the greatest guitar solos of all time.

I'd second Jimi Hendrix on "All Along The Watchtower." Simply brilliant.

Also, gotta drop a nomination for Eric Clapton on "White Room."

He has some sick stuff. I have always loved 'Voodoo Child' he just starts out the song by ripping it and it goes the entire way. Just crazy sounds man.

All Along the Watchtower (my favorite Hendrix song) - Jimi Hendrix

This far into the thread and no mention of the most famous solo? I guess I'll put it ("Stairway to Heaven") in the conversation. It might not be as intense as EVH's "Eruption" but it's pure passion.

So, I already mentioned the obvious two, here's some more:

"Heartbreaker" - Led Zeppelin
"Since I've Been Loving You" - Led Zeppelin
"Comfortably Numb" - Pink Floyd
"Money' - Pink Floyd
"All Along the Watchtower" - Jimi Hendrix
"Voodoo Child" - Jimi Hendrix
"Machine Gun" - Jimi Hendrix
"November Rain" - Guns N' Roses
"Sweet Child O' Mine" - Guns N' Roses
"One" - Metallica
"Master of Puppets" - Metallica
"Stranglehold" - Ted Nugent
"Crossroads' - Cream
"Cocaine" - Eric Clapton
"Surfing with the Alien"- Joe Satriani
"Man in the Box" - Alice in Chains

Two underrated solos: EVH in Michael Jackson's "Beat It", Billy Corgan on "Cherub Rock" (and I am not a Pumpkins fan).

Would Lynryd Skynyrd's "Freebird" count as a solo? If it does then it's my personal favorite.

I'll put my personal top 10 too.

1. Freebrid
2. All Along the Watchtower
3. Comfortubly Numb
4. Eruption
5. Stairway to Heaven
6. Fade to Black (Metallica)
7. Crossroads
8. Voodoo Child
0. Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix)
10. One
