Former Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld believes Real Madrid should sign Michael Ballack.
The German international has been strongly linked with the Merengues who have often failed to impress this season.

“Real need a player like Ballack because Michael is also strong in defence and Real need to do something in defence,” Hitzfeld told German television network Premiere.

He also gave his general opinion of Real’s current problems: “Roberto Carlos is too old, Zidane is tired too much, Salgado runs more than a thousand kilometres each match and is also tired.”

He added: “Real Madrid needs to reform all of the team. Real have only bought offensive players, if they invested more in the defence, they would be invincible in the future.”

Hitzfeld was linked with the Real post earlier in the week as current boss Vanderlei Luxemburgo comes under increasing pressure for his job.

Real needs defense, thus they should sign an attacking midfielder.

Why don't they grab defenders? Or keep guys like Walter Samuel when they have them?

I think Hitzfeld is saying they need an Attacking Midfielder like Ballack because he tracks back and wins the ball in addition to his offensive prowess.

Personally, I think they have all the pieces in place except for Robbie Carlos' replacement as long as they stop playing guys out of position ahead of guys like Graveson. Graveson can automatically turn that team around if he plays all the time, he's so tough and can just win the ball; he's like Makelele or how Desailly used to be at Milan. Put someone like that in your midfield and you're better instantly, you don't need two playmakers, you need a holding mid and a playmaker. They have Graveson, Beckham, Ballack/Julio Baptista, Guti in mid; and then Ronaldo and Raul/Robinho up top. That's fine.

OF course, they had Makelele who is the best in the world at exactly what he needs. But he doesn't sell shirts, does he?

I could see Real getting Ballack simply because the move makes no sense. Yes, he is better than several of the other attacking mids that Real have, but those guys are all world class. Real needs defense, but they probably won't go for a guy like Alex from PSV. Instead, they'll get more attacking players.
