If Ilic comes over next year

and the Nets believe that he will by Draft Night, I think that increases the already likely possibility that the Nets will trade up...or at least try.

It would permit them to get a better player, reduce the number of rookies on the roster and save some money for Ilic.

Ilic may require more than a minimum $400,000 contract, which is what most second rounders get. Because he is a second rounder, the Nets can offer him basically anything they want . But if he is going to pay off his buyout and if the Nets want to keep him away from a European team, they may have to give him a deal similar to the one that Cleveland gave Anderson Varejao two years ago when he went in the second round. Cleveland thought they got a steal with him [after getting him in a draft night trade with the Magic]. Even though all they had to do was give him a minimum deal, they signed him to a three year, $2.5 million contract.

And the possibility that he could sign with a European team should not be taken lightly. There were reports in the Serbian sports press that Panathianakos, the big Greek team that plays in the Athens Olympic arena wants him. They could pay him a lot more than $400,000 NBA minimum. Maybe agent talk, but maybe real.

Would not be surprised to see Ilic's agent talking to the Nets soon, if not already.

do you guys think that top 3 pick holders will trade their first overall pick for our 2 #1's?
Man i wouldnt trade Illic....this draft is gonna be pretty deep with alot of busts in the top picks with alot fo good players falling late...Illic is 7'1 long and athletic...plays good De from what i here and can block shots...i'd rather keep him and use our 2 late picks on big guy and a quality pg.

No chance they get a top ten pick. My guess would be they move up about seven or eight spots, tops. And that's if they find someone willing to move down, which NBA teams don't want to do MOST of the time.

Right now NBADraft.net has Marcus Williams going at #18 to Washington. He would work well w/ Kidd and Carter in the backcourt, if they were to move up. But do the Nets EVER trade up?
I see no history of Rod Thorn being a GM trading up..maybe he will keep the picks...
The Nets needs good young talent in order to have the ability to make trades that can get them over the hump. They may need that young talent to play if they make a big trade this summer- which seems less likely with the streak and Nenad's development.

It is good to hear Ilic is up to 250 lbs- at least it is possible for him to gain weight.

How good/deep this draft will be is up in the air until all the underclassmen declare their intentions. The #24 & 25 picks may have some decent value or they may not have much value at all.

I've always felt that Ilic was coming over this summer. I don't think he wants to stay in Serbia any longer than he has to given what Krstic's been able to accomplish in NJN so far. Reports of meetings between Stefanski and Ilic seem earnest.

Practically speaking, I'm more sanguine about what he'll be able to accomplish in the short term. Working out a weight-training program with Rick Dalatri is wise.

Maybe backing Krstic to afford the team some more shot-blocking, rebounding and defensive presence'd help. More depth at the Center position couldn't hurt.

All said, I'm determined that the NETS retain all their picks in the draft. Given their position in the draft order (late first round), they aren't capable of moving up much in this draft. Even if they could move up into the middle of the round (doubtful), it's unlikely they'd be able to obtain a player of any better quality than what'd be available when their turns come.

Accordingly, unless they were offered Tyrus Thomas or LaMarcus Aldridge, I'd pass on upgrading my position in the draft.

As it stands, the NETS may have a crack at, e.g., Boone, Pittsnogle and Justin Williams (I'm not saying these guys are the best choices with the NETS's respective picks). Why trade up for a Hilton Armstrong?

I'd rather stockpile quality bigs like SAS does (Luis Scola is one of their reserve picks). It is wiser to draft three bigs and bring 'em into camp to see what they can do. Well selected, all may shine. At least, one or two should be good. Maybe the NETS'll have the big man depth they've always been dreaming of and won't have to go 'hat-in-hand' to other teams for a big? At worst, they might be able to stash a Tiago Splitter.

Realistically, that's what it's going to take to be the last team standing when the finals are over against the likes of SAS. It will also aid rebuilding when the time comes. No more Jason Collins apologists, please. He won't stand up in a seven-game series with any elite team with a superior PF/C.

Dave D'Alessandro has said the Nets are looking to package the picks to move up.

At this stage of the game, that could be smoke and mirrors.

I'd wager that size and depth is more important.

Three quality, late first and second round rookies cost less than Jason Collins contract altogether. Moreover, they're likely to be better and conribute more in the short, if not long-term.

Finally, what'd you rather have, another healthy young K-Mart and Wilcox/Kemp type or Jason and Cliffy as your frontline once you're a perennial playoff entrant?
Maybe the two 1st round picks can net us Boone or Pitsnoggle and Glen Davis...I rather have 3 BIGS(2 Picks and Ilic) in the camp..and draft a PG on the 2nd Round..
Fine, that's an option. Glen Davis is intriguing to belly-up Shaq. Boone or Pittsnogle is going to add some brawn.

Of course, the NETS may go foreign. Splitter and some others come to mind. The advantage is that they can stash 'em overseas for a while as they develop.
