Is Ben Wallace really that out of reach?

I have been thinking about this for a long time, ever since we traded Jalen for cap relief. Would it really be that hard to get Ben Wallace in a Raptors uniform next season. I mean Ben has been underpaid all his career and if we show him the big bucks i think he would be willing to leave, i mean Joe Johnson left the best team in the league to be with the worst litterally, and i realize that they are a bit different players but the concept is the same. Most of you guys are sayign we will have to pay Pryzbilla about 10 mill a year, so why not try to over pay Big Ben instead with another 3-4 mill? I think getting Ben solves alomst all of our defensive, rebounding, shot blocking issues, because these are his bread and butter strengths, getting him would get Bosh to resign with certainty, and we would go into the playoffs with as much certain and probably win a a round or 2. I think we should aggressively pursue Ben Walllce in the offseason, maybe a sign and trade, for our pick perhaps?

He fired his agent to get a lawyer to resign with the pistons.
Getting Wallace would be an epic coup. He will still be playing hard and in good shape until he's 40. You can't overpay a worker like him.

Problem is Detroit will do just about anything to retain him, and he has no incentive to go elsewhere--assuming Detroit will match any offers he gets, if it even gets that far.
max deal for Big Ben?

would the raps be willing to do that? Would pistons be willing to match that?
It would make sense for the raptors to try, but it would never happen.
I dont really like Big Ben and I think that the max contract is too much for a defensive undersized center, with no offensive game, that isnt getting any younger.
I know lots of people will bash this, but thats just my opinion.
I think the raptors would be better to go after somone like tyrus thomas or Kmart.
More realistic.
another question i have, hopefully SHEED can answer this, is Big Ben an RFA or a UFA, because if they can offer him more money, why did they try to clear cap space by trading darko and Arroyo for Cato, wouldnt his salary not count against the cap? Or am i thinking Bird rights and getting the MAX is the same thing?
Big Ben is way over-rated. Throwing a ton of money his way would be quite the mistake, IMO.
If we don't go over market value for him then I think it would be a great signing. But I don't think Detroit wants to let him go, and why would he wanna leave a contender for the Raps? Though I would love to have him here in TO because he brings interior toughness and D, I hope they pass on him if his price tag is too high, I don't think its worth it.

Agreed, Ben Wallace is going to be waaaay overpaid this summer for what he brings to the table. If another team were to sign him, it would be a big mistake. He looks good in the Pistons system, but on a different team I think he would not look like a max player.
Max deal for Ben would be:

$16,800,000 (age 32)
$18,480,000 (33)
$20,160,000 (34)
$21,840,000 (35)
$23,520,000 (36)
Total: $100.8 million/5 years

The Pistons already have $48 million commited for next year, maxing out Ben would put them well into luxury tax range. Plus Billups is up for renewal after next season, and he'll want to be paid too. The Pistons may not want to pay that much for aging player. They've built their contender by not overpaying for anyone.

From a feasibility standpoint for the Raptors, unless Alvin retires or Eric Williams opts out they'd have to find a way to dump another couple million in salary to offer Ben the max. Trade Bonner or Hoffa for a 2nd rounder or something.

He's unrestricted. Detroit has Bird rights, so they can exceed te cap to sign him. However they want to avoid the luxury tax, thus the salary dump.

Since he's unrestricted there's no such thing as matching offers. He can go where ever he wants. The Raptors can offer him $100 mil and Detroit can offer him $80 mil, and he can decide to sign with Detroit if he wants to. Personally I think he will go for the highest offer, players always do.
Ben Wallace's game is based largely on his athleticism - which will deteriate as he gets older and older (he's already declining). So no thanks.. especially since it would likely be a maximum deal.
I know 1 thing is for sure. CB4 & Ben would be 1 sickass frontcourt.

Budgetary reasons. He is a UFA but they have Bird rights.

even when he wil be on the decline he would still be a very very good player, the worst he could be is a prime Antonio Davis, which was a very very servicable player, and like speedy said he is wayy too much of a hard worker to slouch as he gets older...

A prime Antonio Davis is a much better offensive player than Ben ever will be.

and an old busted up Ben Wallace will be more valuable asset then Antonio will ever be and was, and a far superior defender, and last time i checked this team really dint need help on the offensive end. We can score enough. we need defense.
If I were Ben..I rather stay at Detroit for 8 MIL per and win championships rather than go to teams and lose even if earning 18/20 MIL per...

over-rated, based on what ratings?

he's in that elite class of centres, which only includes shaq, brad miller, ilgauskas, dalembert and kaman
