Is Kwame starting to get it?

If anyone hasn't noticed, the leftcoasters have been playing some real good ball even without Kobe going nuts every night. One reason has been Lamar Odom playing much better but the other reason has been some shockingly consistent performances from Kwame Brown. The Lakeshow is starting to put their boot into a playoff spot.

First Diop then Darko then Kwame. Their is a lesson here somewhere....

Phil Jackson working miracles. He just has a perfect grasp on handling players and forming perfect expectations for them. Kwame Brown was never going to be a really great offensive player, and he never will. He doesn't have the hands or coordination. He can however be a great defender, rebounder and a respectable offensive player. He has more than enough physical tools to be a 1st tier defender and rebounder in this league, two things the Lakers could use desperately.
When Kwame starts putting together really solid games on a routine basis, and plays like somebody who deserved to be traded for a 15+ppg scorer, then he'll "get it," and hopefully, for the Lakers, he will, because he's so big, strong, and athletic that there's really no reason aside from his willpower (which hasn't exactly been a strong suit for him) stopping him from being an excellent rebounder and defender.
Maybe..if he's consistent..
For anyone who hasn't paid attention, he's just beginning to "get it" on the offensive side. I'd venture to say that he's been a TOP low-block defender ALL year. When he gets assigned to guard someone in particular, say Duncan, KG, Yao, Shaq, etc, he's done a very good job.

Phil Jackson told him to "be like Ben Wallace". He's been doing that all year. Since Mihm went down, he's able to play his more natural offensive position, C. More importantly, Lamar Odom's "aggressive" play is opening things up for Kwame, and LO being LO, sees Kwame open and gets it to him.

Kwame has found his niche with the Lakers. Defensive stopper downlow and garbage man on Offensive. All he has to do is play D, on offense, Phil showed him that he just has to be ready for the pass when LO or Kobe drive, because teams aren't going to guard him that often.
His hands have magically improved over the last few months. Chris Mihm's hands were worthless last season too, but all of a sudden he's not bumbling balls or dropping passes this year nearly as much as he was last season. Kwame has, over the last 3-4 weeks, finally kicked the habit of throwing up garbage at the basket (he would sometimes, litterally brick or air ball a layup a few months ago), and now he's taking his time and taking it strong at the rim. None of that ***** layup crap directly under the basket like he used to. And that's not to mention Odom; who has turned into a completely different player over the last month as well. Even his defense has improved.

Is it Phil Jackson? I don't know, but if they get out of the first round (Suns or Spurs guaranteed), Jackson should be given COY.

now we must wait to see if its just a phenomenon or if its going to be like this permanently
I witnessed Kwame play defense against the Nets recently. He was awful. Have a nice day.

I witnessed that as well.
Whatever Kwame "got" in his last few good games, will be quickly forgotten the next time someone hurts his feelings. He's quite the sensitive type...you can blame MJ for that.
Wizards fans...care to weigh in on this...lol?

I wonder what a search of the Wizards forum and the title "Is Kwame Finally Getting It?" would yield?

heard this song and dance every year from wizards fans. This is Kwame's jig. Until he plays at a top level for an entire season, **** that noise. You build your house on Kwame Brown, you're building it on sand. He's not someone you can rely on.
See this is where I have to say whoa. Why do posters blame the player for the team's stupidity. I think this is a nice natural progression for a big in the NBA, they usually find their niche at 24-26 years old and go from there. It is rare for a big man to get it before the age 24. Even Dwight Howard is just a product of his physical tools right now. All Kwame has to do is be a 12/10 guy consistently and I think that is possible...for a NBA center that is definitely lottery worthy. Pish posh to the fools who have expectations of instant gratification.

P.S. Look for this same development in Eddy Curry next season. My prediction for next year is the Chicago and New York will not swap picks.
A couple more games like this, and he might turn me into a believer. And that's saying a lot :).

peace

(Obviously the following applies to the time before the age limit)

Fair enough. I'd tend to agree that bigger bodies tend to take longer to mature, get co-ordinated, whatever, than smaller ones. BUT...it's one thing to spend a lottery pick on a 21-22 year old and have him be a good rotation guy/starter-worthy by his third year. But using a very valuable (high) lottery pick on 18-19 year olds, no GM (of a bad team, ie in the lottery) is in a position to be waiting five or six years on some guy to hopefully "get it". If he does eventually pan out, it's probably going to be in someone else's uniform and you've just paid the tab for his development time while some other team reaps the benefits the productive part of his career. Are they still really "lottery worthy" then?

Olowokandi to become the biggest bust in NBA history???? With these guys emerging, I say yes.
The people (idiots) that have absolutely no patience and point and call players in their early 20's busts before they have time to develop are hilarious.
Olowokandi has something none of those three have even come close to so far, a 12/9 season.
