Is the 2006 Draft Similar to the 1998 Draft?

I was looking at the draft prospects, and somehow a lot of candidates in this draft reminded me of the 98 draft. No consensus #1 pick but size rules and this draft lacks it. Unless a team that doesn't need size gets the #1, Aldridge is probably the consensus #1 pick although very raw.

I listed the top 14 picks (to coincide with this year's lottery) and compared them to upcoming prospects.

that draft turned out to be very good, upperclassmen went earlier like kandiman, bibby and lafrentz but the real gems like dirk, pierce and carter dropped a bit. i dont see this class having that impact, its probably more like the 2000 draft(martin,fizer,miller....)as far as quality goes.

That was my intent on creating the thread. Because there isn't really a consensus of who the top picks would be, a lot of people are under the assumption that this is a poor draft. There's a lot of bigs declaring, but none really that look like they are a lock to be a good player. Outside of Dirk and maybe Vince (moreso only early in his career), there really were no superstars from the 98 draft class. However, there were a lot of borderline All-Stars to lower end All-Stars in that class.

There are a lot of talented guys in the upcoming draft, although each person seems to have some holes. Those that fill those holes over time and experience will probably end up being the gems of this class. I just think that we'll see a lot more productive NBA careers in the upcoming draft then what seems to be the general consensus (that the upcoming draft is more similar to 2000).

And I agree with that assessment.

There will be some great players in this draft.
This draft is for teams that need guard help more than big man help. Lots of quality in the 2nd round (I'm looking at you, LA Lakers).

you've got the best guard in the league there, i think they need help at the 4/5 ,kwame brown isnt the answer and mihm would probably need a top flight pf next to him to get the job done. is andrew bynum the answer.
Sorry, but those projections and player comparisons were terrible.

It wasn't about projections. Just about how people look coming out of college now to coming out of college then. I guess it's more a question of style of game moreso than where I think they will end up as NBA players.

Since I'm using the entire lottery then vs. a decent projected lottery now, there will be a lot of variations. I don't like the Foye to Bibby and Morrison to Jamison at all, but they have the most similar style in terms of skills, hype, size, altheticism, etc than anyone else then, and that's the basis I used for all my comparisons. I just think there a lot of very skilled guys in the draft but none are a very finished product. There are also a lot of high basketball IQ guys, and those that figure it out have the potential to be very good players if not All Stars.

Constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated if you think I should swap the 06 comparison with someone different with a reason or if you think there is a better draft comparison and why. Some people liken it to the 2000 draft. Show me the qualities.
