ISIAH GIVES HERB 'COMFORT'

Isiah Thomas and Herb Williams huddled in the coach's office for more than 20 minutes following the Knicks' ninth straight defeat last night when they learned about their official elimination from playoff contention.
But there was no firing. No point. Thomas, who watched the Bulls' 102-94 victory from the skybox instead of his normal visible spot in the tunnel, emerged and indicated he was simply giving a comforting, consoling talk to his head coach, knowing he needs the pat on the back.

Soul-searching time for Knicks

The previous two times a high-ranking Knicks executive had met with the head coach for an extended period immediately after a loss, it resulted in Don Chaney receiving a contract extension and Lenny Wilkens receiving a pink slip. Williams got neither.
Whether the Knicks retain Williams or throw millions at a marquee coach, the organization has to reevaluate its philosophy about what type of players it wants to build around.
