Jason Kidd: STILL the best point guard in the world!

977 Views 27 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  Fray
Nash might be the MVP, but Jason Kidd showed us why he's still #1 among point guards.

Why? Two words:

DEE. FENSE.

It's half the game. As fantastic as Nash is on offense, he can't do what Kidd can do on the defensive end. Kidd shut him down...Nash finished with ZERO points.

(as a side note, Nash still gets my vote for MVP. But Kidd is still the man. And seriously, when was the last time either one of those guys was on a losing team? Pass-first, playmaking point guards = Most important players in basketball)

There's like 100 threads where this discussed. We don't need any more.
When was the last time that a reigning MVP was held scoreless?

Kidd's recent defensive assignments:

3/27/06 - Steve Nash: 0 points on 0/5 FG, 5 assists, 2 turnovers

3/26/06 - Chauncey Billups: 9 points son 2/10 FG, 5 assists, 1 turnover

3/21/06 - Gilbert Arenas: 25 points on 6/17 FG, 8 assists, 3 turnovers

3/19/06 - Jason Terry: 8 points on 3/10 FG, 5 assists, 2 turnovers

3/17/06 - Kobe Bryant: 24 points on 9/24 FG, 11 assists, 7 turnovers

Kidd is still easily the best defensive PG in the league. It'll be a crime if he doesn't return to the All-Defensive First Team this season.

I think 7 of those points came at the end of the game when Frank switched Kidd onto Rip and Carter on to Billups.

He also had a good game verus Arenas defensively early in the year.

But on the flip side, guys like Speedy Claxton, Parker, and Iverson are his weakness.

I don't have a problem w/ people saying Nash is better (though I disagree) for many of the reasons stated in this and other threads. But the notion that anyone else is anywhere near those two dudes is absurd.
Its really sad that it seems only Nets fans are the ones that agree with this. But what it all boils down to is the fact that when it comes to the playoffs there are lots of guys that are capable of going of for big games, defense is going to be crucial. The nets have a guy in Kidd who can go out and shut guys down or at best take them out of their comfort zones. Ladies and gentlemen thats what seperates boys from men and thats what makes Kidd the better player.

Its more than defense. JKidd is one of the rare players in this league who has the capacity to be omnipresent. He can control a game and assert himself in a game in any and every facet.

No doubt.

But what REALLY makes me laugh is when people try to put a piece of human-pyrite like Allen Iverson up there.
Up to this day, I still love Jason Kidd's game more than any other point guard I have witnessed play in the NBA. He's Steve Nash with more style and more defense but just doesnt have Nash's range...

Umm lets not get carried away there, Allen Iverson is another extremely rare ballplayer
this is one stretch of 5 games we're talking about. lets not get carried away with kidd's defense. when brevin knight went for 25 i didn't hear this talk. when they played pho the 1st time this year, we didn't hear this talk.

82games stats by position don't paint the same pretty picture over the course of the year. 52% efg%, 17.1 per.
It still doesn't make up for Kidd's horrible scoring efficiency, compared to Nash. But his defense is quite superb, yes. It has always been very good.

Carried away?

Jason Kidd has been an NBA All defense team numerous times in his career...though this recent 5 game stretch certainly attracts attention, he is not a stranger with defense. I think its not a blank statement to say that J.Kidd is still arguably the best pg in the game.

Kidd is the man. I still dont know why people dont consider him a top 5 pg anymore. He hasnt lost a step. Hes been producing 14pts,8reb,9ast 2stl and is a great leader! leads leader in t-dubs. Also people dont even consider him on an all team!! Shame on you! Kidd is arguably the best or second best pg, without a doubt.

his defense the last few years has without question declined. his impact defensively over this recent stretch has been impressive, but i would be hesitant to say he's back to his all-defensive days. his defense over the course of the season hasn't been close to what it's been for this stretch.

That's a myth. Jason's defense hasn't regressed much at all over the past couple of years, but the level he has been on the past couple of weeks has been unreal. I've never seen a player play defense this well in my entire life. Of course it's near impossible to do it over an entire season.

Kidd's defensive weakness is small, speedy guards, but he can shut down mostly any other position (of course not C). Often times he is put on players 4 inches taller than him and he has no problem shutting them down. It all comes down to his basketball IQ, which I feel is unmatched in the Association today.
^ Well said jmk. It's hard not to admire Kidd's defensive impact, especially in terms of psyching out opposing players. He is still so directionally quick (not just latterally) and is very strong with great hands and long arms that it allows him to contain pretty much any PG in the league save for the extremely quick ones (which very, very few can really guard anyway). And it's clear that opposing guards don't like going up against him.

any explanation for the 82games opposition stats for the year?

again, there are plenty of examples of players having superb games against the nets and kidd this year.

kidd's decline has not been a myth. he's had trouble keeping players in front of him. the players he's able to play physical with, and deny the ball, are the players he's had greater success with.
I think Kidd has declined some defensively, but I also think that his reputation was severely hurt after Tony Parker was getting by him with ridiculous ease in the finals. Tony Parker can get by just about anyone though, so his reputation may have been hurt unfairly.
