Loss snaps a five game winning streak for the Golden Bulls

Charlotte, NC - The Golden Bulls had their winning streak snapped after a 79-67 conference loss to Virginia Union University Saturday night inside a packed Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU drops to 9-2 in the standings and 3-2 in the CIAA, while the Panthers improve to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

JCSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening minute and a half. VUU battled back and a three-pointer by guard Braxton Byerson put the Panthers ahead 9-8 five minutes into the contest. VA Union held onto the lead for the remainder of the first half and stretched their lead to 13 in the closing seconds before halftime.

Senior guard Ryan Scott sank a three right before the end of the first half to send the Golden Bulls into the locker room trailing 42-32. Halfway into the second period, JCSU had cut into the Panthers' advantage. VUU was up 58-50 after two made free throws by forward Gregg Thondique with 9:14 remaining.

Johnson C. Smith rallied with an 8-0 scoring run over the next two minutes to tie the game at 58 with seven minutes to play. VA Union maintained their composure to retake the lead. With less than two minutes and VUU up 72-61, it was obvious that the Golden Bulls would not be able to pull out the victory.

JCSU shot just 34.5% from the floor (10-of-29) compared to the Panthers 45.2% (14-of-31). Five Panthers had double digit point totals. Braxton Byerson had a team-high 22 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.

The Golden Bulls were led by Scott, who finished with a game-high 25 points. Junior forward Jerry Hollis had 16 points and six rebounds, while sophomore guard Ronald Thornhill contributed with 13 points.

JCSU will bounce back when they travel to Concord, NC to face Concord University on Wednesday, January 7th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
