That's a lot of money for a pitcher who just turned 30 but I guess Detroit didn't really have a choice. Losing him for nothing would have been a franchise crippling move.

I think that's the climate of baseball. You keep your own before they hit free agency.

I saw the opposite happen in St. Louis when they let Pujols hit the market.

Love this deal. Absolutely love it. Justin Verlander is really one of the most technically sound fireballers in the game. Not in a Mark Prior "his form is perfect" sort of way - but in a "all his power comes from his legs" sort of way. Even when he's really reaching back for that fireball fastball - he's throwing easy. Any pitcher on any day can fall out of alignment for one pitch and ruin himself - but Verlander is as close to a safe bet as you're going to see in baseball.
