obviously, over their entire career, duncan/robinson are the superior players. but when duncan joined the spurs, robinson was already in decline mode, suppose the rockets trade t-mac for KG this off season, would the 06-07 KG+yao combo be better than the 97-2002 duncan+robinson combo?

1997-2002 is a fairly wide range of Robinson's play, so it's tough to say. He was declining somewhat in 97/98, but not nearly like he was a few years later.

I do think that with Garnett/Yao, their team would get much closer to the sum of parts than the Spurs did with Duncan/Robinson. This is due to Duncan/Robinson's offensive roles having more overlap.

I agree that DRob impacted a game more than Duncan but Duncan is clutch & raised his level deeper in the playoffs. Duncan's best performances were always in the playoffs.

Duncan also had a more "complete" team then DRob. Also Drob was in an era dominated by more dominant Centers, PF's in their prime and MJ so his road was a lot harder then Duncan. Had the roles been reversed, duncan most likley wouldnt have gotten his ring till 98 and DRob have 3
