He has a $21.4mm player option in 2008-09. That is the same year Nenad could become a restricted free agent. If Kidd is healthy and playing well can the Nets negotiate a 2 year firm deal at say $14mm each year in the summer of 2008 BEFORE Kidd decides on his option? Or would Kidd need to unwisely decline the option before they negotiate?

If the Nets can do that at that time it would create extra room for a new contract for Nenad.

I would take a guaranteed extra $6.5mm at age 36. Particularly if it meant keeping my team together.

It all depends on what Kidd's value would be on the open market after that $21.4mm season. If it's not much more than $6.5mm is it worth the risk of making it to free agency injury free? Plus I just used that figure as an estimate. You could do $30mm over 2 giving him an extra $8.5mm and still save the Nets over $6mm in 2008-09.

Shaq took a pay cut for the Heat, it doesn't have to be a major pay cut it could be a couple mil (yes I know that's still alot of money but if he wants a better team) just to free up cash for FA's. By then we'll be paying RJ a bunch and have resigned VC and Nenad right? We're gonna need some extra dough becuase MLE's don't get ya what they used to.

Shaq took a pay cut to 20M, which is about what Kidd would make on his option.

Maybe Kidd will? Personally I won't.

It's not even a pay cut. It's just adding a year at a reasonable amount and back loading some money due him into that additional year.

You wouldn't take a guaranteed extra $6.5 to $8 million dollar contract for a season in which you would turn 37? Two years in advance?

Hey if it means we keep Kidd for a little bit longer and improve our team in the process who wouldn't be on board? It's a question of how good a salesman is Thorn on something like that and would Kidd's agent be on board for it.

Kidd's agent is working for Pierce too, so a few thousand dollars won't hurt his bank account too much. I like looking at this from Stockton's last deal, one year contract 8 million as a point of reference. We're basically proposing 7.5 million for the additional season. At that time what's the MLE going to be 6 million? He may go for it, he's laid down his family in NJ, plus who knows he may get a job with the front office after the playing days are done.

No. What if I decide to retire? I risk losing ALL the money I backloaded then?

If the market is for 6.5M to 8M, and I'd still want to play, I'll take it then, if not, I have the huge amount up front.

By the time you make the decision in 2008 you will know if you want to retire in a year. Besides you could just make half of the 2009-10 salary guaranteed even in the event of player retirement. That guarantees the whole $21+mm option if you feel like retiring after the one season. If you get injured you get an extra $8mm for that year.

If you are going into that year thinking about possible retirement when it's over the point is mute. The whole idea of it is to re-sign Nenad without financially crippling the team. If Kidd plans on retiring after the 2008-2009 season he won't care as much about the team losing Nenad.
