Alright so let me make my case, I'm Canadian and i LOVE the raps. One of my favourite teams, but Bonner is soooooooo overated it's not even funny. He can spot up shoot very very well, but so can pat garitty. Everyone talks about all these "Garbage" rebounds he grabs, when does he get those? I see almost every raps game and all i see is shooting. Oh ya, and he is quite possibly, the worst player in the NBA at driving to the hoop, just freacking terrible at it. Im not hating by any affect, i frigen love the raps, but come on you guys be honest with yourselves, he is a shooter and thats it. Oh ya i forgot to mention, he can't pass, steal, block and he is not athletic.

If you love the Raptors how come you aren't posting here more often? You're welcome to.

Bonner is a bit overvalued by Raptors fans, true. But he's good at what he does. Every team needs good shooters and players that take quality shots.

He does average 3.4 boards in 20 minutes, which is decent for a 3/4.

and for a white man that CANT jump...j/k..
You beat me to it . There are some times when I hate being white, like when I realize I'm almost 5'11" and can't even touch rim...

But I'm getting off track here. Bonner is basically a shooter and an OK rebounder, but sharpshooters that hustle and have a good personality are almost always fan favorites and will be overrated. He functions well in his role on the team - no Raptor fan (in their right mind) expects him to be a superstar in the future or anything like that, just a likeable roleplayer.

I don't think people overrate him, but they just value him and like him a lot because he is the type of player that will do all the dirty work for you, and leaves it all our on the floor.

I mean no one is saying he's going to be an all-star or anything, most people are just saying that he is the replacement for Donyell..

Yes Matt is over-rated. Hearing the announcers talk about his "defense" and hard work and stuff lol. This guy doesn't do anything on the defensive end. Yes he might try, but he doesnt come up with any balls or big rebounds.

Bonner will never be the type of player that drives to the basket, he just doesn't have those kind of skills. All he is going to do is shoot. And once all teams get a grip on that, he will be shutdown every game and will eventually slide to the end of the bench. I just hope the raps don't make him a foolish offer in the offseason. 2mil a year max. And for Sow, sign him for the league min. for another year and then make a decision on him.

I would assume the reason why Raps fans are so high on him is because he's a young player who has produced solid results. The Raps don't have a lot of those kinds of guys right now. Chris Bosh is a budding star but other than him, for young new players the Raps have Bonner, Sow, and Rafael Araujo.....Sow hasn't played and Araujo, well, he plays about 8 minutes a game as a starter and they want more from him....so they get excited over Bonner because he's a young cog in the wheel. The Raps will get some good ones in this draft and then Bonner will probably fade in popularity, but he's not a bad bench guy....everyone needs shooters.

Difference....
Pat Garitty
39.8 FG%....33.8 3FG%

Matt Bonner
54.1 FG%....44.6 3FG%

The league is all about specialists now adays, not as many well rounded players, so if you can really excell at one area (54 FG%, next only to Shaq), then you have a place in this league

Matt Bonner might be overated by Raptors fans, but I guarantee if he was playing with a Miami or Houston (teams that are desperate for consistent outside shooting), he would be getting even more accolades.

Matt's attitude, work ethic and hustle are traits that every team in the league looks for in players.

I think he could be a Steve Kerr, John Paxson, Dell Curry (without the quick release) type marksman, that many teams will look at.

i agree with this. (i agree with a number of posts in this thread, actually, but i don't know how to quote more than one.)

now, that doesn't mean i completely disagree with lakerlunatic either, i just think he's going too far to the opposite extreme to convey how he really feels about matt bonner. i don't think he thinks matt's "the worst player in the league at driving to the hoop". that's not true. i don't know who the worst player is on that criterion, i don't even know if something like that can be looked at objectively, but i think lakerlunatic already knows this. in fact, bonner went baseline the other day and finished with a flush, it was actually pretty impressive, but it doesn't matter. i don't want to waste my time on this point.

i agree, however, that bonner could indeed improve his rebounding. i think he still rebounds like an ncaa player and that doesn't normally cut it in the pros. that said, i think he has gotten a little better in that respect, and he could also learn quite a bit from chris, who's become a much better rebounder over the course of this season (imo).

i think there are some obvious reasons to explain bonner's popularity, and i would agree with the "overrated" opinion because of them. but he does help the team in some intangible ways, i reckon. and i don't think bonner's the kind of player around whom we're building anyway. i don't think we're wasting either too many possessions or dollar bills on matt bonner, so i don't think his hype machine really hurts us that much.

peace
