I like it, but take Utah out and replace them with Seattle, Memphis or Houston.

People, People, please post reasons!

What makes a post like this fun IMO is reasons for rankings!

EAST
1)New Orleans -- so versatile; can contend with any frontcourt AND any backcourt in the conference
2)New Jersey -- upgraded slightly in the offseason; need time to gel
3)Indiana -- their talent is simply unparalleled
4)Orlando -- this team moves up to 3 if Grant Hill plays healthy all year
5)Philadelphia -- Van Horn won't help that much, but Iverson will be looking to prove something
6)Milwaukee -- Tim Thomas will break out here and now; Kukoc is a nice bench player
7)Boston -- absolutely killed their chances to contend with moves this offseason
8)Detroit -- their defense is the reason they get in over...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Toronto -- Vince will be an MVP candidate if they make the playoffs
Atlanta -- another team on the rise
Miami -- Caron needs a year to find his way; serious roster shuffling after the season
New York -- improvement is possible, but not a given
Washington -- even MJ can't make this bunch a playoff team
Chicago -- may finish slightly higher if no one gets hurt
Cleveland -- worst in basketball the last five years (at least)

WEST
1)Sacramento -- will sweep whatever Eastern Conference team they meet in the Finals
2)San Antonio -- these guys better show a commitment to keeping Duncan
3)Dallas -- defense will improve as they grow together; Cuban may get Fortson and Popeye
4)LA Lakers -- tough to win lotsa regular season games with Shaq on IR
5)Portland -- finally getting some role players to go with the stars; resign Bonzi!!!
6)LA Clippers -- Dre, Brand, Kandi, Odom, and Q will make them contenders in two years if they all stay
7)Minnesota -- Hudson for Billups means they did not change much
8)Utah -- I don't know how, but they are always in the playoffs
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix -- Amare Stoudamire will surprise alot of people
Seattle -- Payton won't let them fall out of the top ten
Houston -- Yao Ming doesn't look half bad, but this Franchise has migraines
Memphis -- Pao will be a good center
Denver -- future looks promising; Skeeta, Nene, Bateer, Camby, Howard make a nice frontcourt
Golden State -- would rise if Arenas and Dunleavy prove themselves

Eastern Conference

1. New Jersey Nets: Best team in the East last year and added Mutombo. May have trouble scoring, and that should be something to watch.

2. Detroit Pistons: I only think it's fair that you give a team the benefit of the doubt. Saying they had a fluke year is absolutely ridiculous, in my opinion. How is winning over an 82 game schedule a fluke? They won their division last year and did absolutely nothing to get worse, in fact, they got better.

3. New Orleans Hornets: They are a very tough team. Should easily challenge Detroit in the Central Division.

4. Orlando Magic: Everybody says their frontcourt sucks, well, what did they have last year? Not much except guys that were over their prime. Sincee they had a pretty good year last year with nothing, and since GHill will be returning, why not say they can finish 4th?

5. Indiana Pacers: Good mixture of young talent. Let's see them get here and then for 2003-04 we can project them as one of the top Eastern Conference teams.

6. Boston Celtics: I believe they took two steps back in the offseason. One, taking on Vin Baker and two, downgrading at the point guard position. Pierce and Walker are still too good of a tandem for them to miss the playoffs.

7. Miami Heat: I predict they will sneak in. Played very well over the second half and added Caron Butler in the offseason. Caron won't have a Duncan on San Antonion impact, but he will help.

8. Philadelphia 76ers: I really can see this team missing the playoffs, but Iverson is a wildcard. Could go either way, in my opinion.

I'm not a Western Conference expert (or Eastern for that matter), but here's what I think it will shape up as...

1. Sacramento Kings
2. Dallas Mavericks
3. Los Angeles Lakers
4. San Antonio Spurs
5. Portland Trailblazers
6. Minnesota TWolves
7. Utah Jazz
8. Los Angeles Clippers

It is possible, since they always have a nice record in the regular season, and then the playoffs hit...you get the picture. ;)

Anyway...I'll go on limb and agree with you anyway.

NJ and Boston can't be 1 and 2. They're both from the same division.

Whoever is the first in their division automatically become 1 and 2, depending who the better record of the two teams.

I think Pacers are a little too high (besides the fact your name is "Pacers fan") and Toronto is definitely too low. Also, you sure about Miami?

you people make me laugh with your placement of boston, tracy mcgrady had the orlando magic in the 5th seed of the playoffs last year BY HIMSELF! he had no help, still got them to the 5th seed, the celtics have paul pierce who IS just as good as mcgrady, where number 3 in the conference last year, hav antoine walker who is a top 10 player in the east probably, they are a great defensive team, dropped a point guard who couldnt consistently hit a 15 foot jump shot asnd only handed out 5 assists per game, and added someone who can score in the post and in the eastern conference that is always good. the only was thi team finishes outside of the top 3 is if pierce is so shot from playing in the worlds that he cant hold up the entire season and goes out with an injury, they are too good.

Good GRIEF, dude! Why in the world do you think the Spurs are going to finish sixth, behind Minnesota and THE CLIPPERS? I think that they are the sleeper team to win the whole damn thing next year, they certainly are as good or better than they were LAST year, when they won nearly 60 ballgames. And Portland at #10, well, again, that's RIDICULOUS, this team really seemed to turn the corner with Mo Cheeks last season, Phoenix and Houston ahead of Portland, give me a damn break!

And the Jazz will continue to regress ever so slightly, they might even finish below .500 next year, but behind the Grizzlies and the Warriors? What? I know that everybody is sick to death of Karl Malone and John Stockton, but STILL!
