Steve Nash didn't utter a sentence about the NBA. He talked about taking care of kids, not guarding Jason Kidd.

The people who introduced Nash did manage to mention pro basketball, and some people in the audience chanted "MVP'' when he took the stage. But not the man himself. When he used a magic three-letter word, it was the "Hut,'' a drinking establishment of some renown among the students at Santa Clara University.

The students roared, and you could practically hear them thinking: He really, really is one of us.

Nash had already told the media that he felt a little strange about giving the keynote speech at Santa Clara University's convocation on Monday while former teammates watched. During the speech, he requested applause for them. Any bets on whether he got it?
