Penguins ship Staal to Hurricanes in blockbuster

The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired Jordan Staal from the Pittsburgh Penguins for the eighth overall pick in Friday night's NHL draft, center Brandon Sutter and defenseman Brian Dumoulin.

The Penguins used the pick to take Derrick Pouliot of the WHL's Portland Winterhawks.

Staal rejected a contract offer from the Penguins earlier this week, which multiple media outlets reported was for 10 years.

Jordan Staal's brother, Eric, also is on the Hurricanes.

Sidney Crosby to sign mega-deal
The Pittsburgh Penguins and Sidney Crosby are finalizing a new contract that will be worth $104.4 million over 12 years, his agent, Pat Brisson of CAA Sports, told ESPN.com on Thursday.

The deal would carry an average salary of about $8.7 million a season, although it would be front-loaded.

The agreement was reported earlier by TSN in Canada.

Crosby, whose 2011-12 season twice was interrupted because of symptoms from a concussion suffered in January 2011, cannot sign the contract until Sunday, per the rules in the collective bargaining agreement for players who have one year remaining on their current contracts.

Crosby's final year on his current deal counts for $8.7 million against the salary cap. The new contract would go into effect for the 2013-14 season.

Thats pretty risky on the Penguins part. Crosby is one hit away from never playing again.

NHL deals are outrageous with the yrs. I mean, they do it to prop it up and count it against the cap so it's minimal. I'm surprised they don't change that with limiting them.

They've tried but teams keep finding loop holes.

I know if you're 31 or 33 or something, the length of any new contract is already limited.

The Devils tried to sign Kovalchuk until he was like 44 or 46 or something and the league told them to go **** themselves. Pretty sure they fined them a draft pick or something.
