On June 12, 1987, two years after Lampe's birth, Pope John Paul II celebrated an outdoor Mass in Lodz (pronounced Wootch) before a crowd numbering several hundred thousand. It was the Holy Father's only recorded visit to Lodz, the second-largest city in Poland and the textile capital of Eastern Europe.
Three months to the day later, the pope celebrated an outdoor Mass at UNO during his visit to the Crescent City.
