FRIENDS MEET: Hornets rookie J.R. Smith and Cleveland All-Star LeBron James have been friends since last year, when they met at the McDonald's all-star game that features the top high school seniors.

On Monday night, Smith scored 22 points, and James scored a game-high 44 on 16-of-29 shooting.

"That's a guy who knows if ever he needs words of encouragement, he can call me," James said. "He's a good friend of mine. I'm kind of mentoring him through everything going on in the NBA, and I'm happy it's working out for him. I think it's my job to lay down stones for guys coming out of high school, the way I did."
