$5000 for O'Neal is like a parking ticket for us normal folks -- a tax deductable one at that.
And like the quaint $2 ticket you'd get for an expired meter in a small town center in rural New England, not the $125 one you get for obstructing a loading zone in the Loop.

(Sorry -- it's just that some parking tickets are damn expensive.)

There ain't no $2 tickets in Chicago. I pay $50 every other time they decide to clean the streets in my neighborhood. But $50 six times a year is less than a parking place at $95/month, so I don't complain.

If Shaq makes $20,000,000 and I make $200,000, then Shaq's $5000 fine = my $50 fine.

Put another way, Shaq makes about $200,000 per game. The fine is about 2.5% of that. So it's not much of a slap on the wrist.
