LOS ANGELES (AP) - After almost three months of indecision, Shaquille O'Neal finally had surgery on his chronically sore big toe Wednesday.....

Kupchak and the rest of the Lakers breathed a sigh of relief after doctors deemed the surgery a success, with Mohr saying, "We're very confident he's going to have a complete recovery."

"When we saw the doctors come out smiling, I think we were all relieved - the team, Shaquille's people, everybody," Kupchak said.

The often mischievous O'Neal was in a jovial mood right after the operation, "Joking, just being Shaq," Kupchak said.

Lakers coach Phil Jackson was among those visiting O'Neal, but he did not speak to reporters.

Operation Goes Well on Shaq Toe

Operation Goes Well on Shaq Toe
Lakers: Center has already regained some range of motion, but recovery time is still six to eight weeks.
_
By TIM BROWN, TIMES STAFF WRITER
Shaquille O'Neal came out of the fog early Wednesday morning, and there were familiar faces at his hospital bedside, Laker officials and O'Neal officials among them.
He grinned crookedly and offered a crude gesture to them all, and they laughed, because they knew then that he probably would be fine.
The force behind three consecutive Laker championships and the predominant reason the franchise expects a fourth, O'Neal woke up, stood up and walked away from surgery on his arthritic big toe, the minimum required for what his doctor later called a successful procedure.
Standing between buildings at UCLA Medical Center, Dr. Robert Mohr said surgeons encountered nothing unexpected in the 45-minute surgery that cleared bone spurs from the first joint of O'Neal's afflicted right toe. The range of motion in the joint improved immediately and significantly, Mohr said, and he predicted a recovery time of six to eight weeks.
A six-week rehabilitation would have O'Neal ready a week before the regular season begins. Eight weeks would have him sit out five games.
"Everything went extremely well today," Mohr said. "Surgery went as scheduled, as planned.
"Hopefully, with the passage of time, Mother Nature and active rehab, he should be back better than he was at the end of last season."
O'Neal and the Lakers are banking on it.

Good news for Shaq & the Lakers - BAD news for the "Great Wall of China". Seriously, that poor guy is going to have a rude awakening when he plays his first games in the NBA! By the end of the 82 game season, Ouch is right, imho.

I've seen Yao play during the world championships, I noticed that he does have a nice shooting touch and runs the floor well and of course with that GREAT WALL height, Shot Blocking skills are included.

The scouting on Yao, is that he's not a physical player or he doesn't like to bang down low, If that is the case, Shaq will easily attack and exploit that weakness, and I'm sure the Diesel know's that already. Yao got his work cut out for him in the Bigg West, he'll be fine and I see him being very productive and putting up decent numbers for the Rockets.

His first NBA lesson...
He will soon learn that a full powered American Diesel will Ram-Sack through any "WALLS",
even if it's the GREAT ONE in China ;)
