Same result from the rematch on Sunday. In an odd scheduling quick, Rhode Island defeated Boston College 71-65 at the Sunshine Slam in Dayton Beach, FL. The two teams both lost their first tournament games there setting up a another meeting just four days after URI had beaten BC in Kingston, RI 57-49.

Some thoughts on yesterday:

Did anyone watch the Purdue/Villanova game?! Damn, those 2 teams are pretty good. Thought Villanova was gonna run away when they went up by 11 in the 2nd half but that was not the case at all. Purdue won 80-74 and shot 52.7% from the floor. I thought that was impressive until I read that they have shot over 50% all 5 games this year, with their season being the game before against #18 North Carolina when they shot a blistering 55.7%. I suppose you can shoot that well when you have such an amazing duo inside...7'4 Edey is a match-up nightmare and they bring an All-American candidate off the bench to replace him in the 6'10 Williams. Anyway, high level game for sure.

There are were so many other great games yesterday: the Bonnies crushing Marquette, #4 Michigan getting blown the hell out by Arizona, West Virginia over Clemson, Rhode Island beating Boston College for the 2nd time in 4 days, Colorado State putting it on Creighton (95-81), but the very best was probably Utah State's Myrtle Beach Classic Championship win over Oklahoma, 73-70 in which Bean had himself a game with 24 pts & 19 rebounds (a career high).

I wonder how good the Mountain West is this year after Co State beating Creighton, Boise State beat Ole Miss and Utah State beat Oklahoma. In addition, UNLV dropped a 1 pt game to Wichita State last night. I look forward to watching that league more and more as the year goes along. Several good teams that are also fun to watch.

Anyway, on to some of the fun games today as we really get into holiday tournaments:

ESPN2
2 pm - Texas A&M vs Wisconsin (Vegas*)
4:30 pm - Butler vs #15 Houston (Vegas*)
11:30 pm - St Mary's vs Notre Dame (Vegas*)

ESPNNEWS
6:30 pm - #10 Illinois vs Cincinnati (Kansas City)
9 pm - #16 Arkansas vs Kansas State (Kansas City)

FS1
6 pm - #19 Ohio State vs Seton Hall (Fort Myers, FL)

BTN
6:30 pm - Cornell @ Penn State

ESPNU
7 pm - Virginia vs Georgia (Newark, NJ)
9 pm - #12 Oregon vs Chaminade (Vegas*)

Pac-12
9 pm - Winthrop @ Washington State
11:30 pm - Dixie State @ #25 USC

CBSSN
10:30 pm - TCU vs Santa Clara (San Juan Capistrano, CA)
1 am - Pepperdine vs Fresno State (San Juan Capistrano, CA)

* - Maui Invitational being played stateside in Las Vegas at the Michelob Ultra Arena

So lots of other fun games/tournaments on the agenda:

1:30 pm - Sam Houston vs Boston Univ (Jacksonville, FL - both won yesterday)
7 pm - Lafayette @ Rutgers
7 pm - Nevada vs South Dakota State (ESPN+, Sioux Falls, SD)
7 pm - Hofstra @ Richmond (ESPN+)
7 pm - Harvard @ Siena (ESPN3)
8 pm - Colorado State vs Northeastern (St Thomas USVI)
8 pm - Belmont @ LSU (ESPN+)
8:30 pm - Missouri vs Florida State (Jacksonville, FL)
9:30 pm - George Mason vs Washington (ESPN+, Sioux Falls, SD)
9:30 pm - Providence vs Northwestern (ESPN+, Newark, NJ)

Naples Invitational - Naples, FL
Noon - Kent State vs James Madison
2:30 pm - Wright State vs George Washington
5:30 pm - East Tennessee State vs Murray State

I don't want to bog down the Vermont Gulf Coast thread as that is more about them instead of the other games, however, I thought some mention of the Evansville vs Rice game needed to happen. Final score, in 3 OTs, was 109-104 with Rice getting the win. I thought it was interesting to note that there were a combined 24 turnovers in 55 minutes. That's pretty incredible...Evansville ended with 11, Rice with 13.

Both teams really only went 7 deep, so fatigue may be a factor tomorrow and definitely will be on Wednesday. For Evansville, Frederking played 53, Newton 52, Kuhlman 46 and Smith Jr 40. For the Owls of Rice, Pierre played 51, Mullins 49, Fiedler 45 and Evee 40.

One note: Antoine Smith, Jr of Evansville shot a perfect 9-9 from the field, including a remarkable 6-6 from 3-pt range. Very impressive shooting display to say the least.

So, Drexel vs Tulane is being played in the Bahamas and is the 2nd game of the day, following Toledo's 98-86 win over Charlotte. The game started around 2:30 but was delayed with just over 12 mins to go in the game due to a leak in the roof. It will resume at 7:30 with Tulane leading 57-53. Can you imagine a 4 hour delay or so in your game? That's rough.

It also impacts the next game, which is Valpo vs Jacksonville State, originally slated to begin at 5:30 but now won't start until 8:30. The good news for the event is that Abilene Christian had pulled out so there were only 3 games on tap for today instead of 4 as Coastal Carolina was given a bye into the semifinals tomorrow.

I was just thinking this kind of thing the other day. I know with most of these tourneys the destination is the selling point. But it's interesting that given how concerned programs are with the quality of facilities, you see major conference programs willingly playing in mid/low-major gyms, and mid-majors playing in gyms with leaking roofs...or programs of all walks playing in makeshift courts in hotel ballrooms and convention spaces.

Some crazy scores yesterday...

Cincinnati 71, #14 Illinois 51 - I'm not even sure the game was this close. Take away the Illini big guy and the rest of the team goes to hell.
GW beat Horizon favorite Wright State, 74-63 - the A-10 really needed that win
Nicholls, who won at Northern Iowa, had to go to OT to defeat Cal Poly
Colorado squeaked by Brown in a defensive battle, 54-52
Lafayette, previously winless, took down Rutgers at the RAC, 53-51
Siena beat Harvard, 72-69
Colorado State remained undefeated, taking down Northeastern, 71-61
LSU smashed Belmont, 83-53
Florida State crushed Missouri, 81-58
Washington slipped by George Mason, 77-74
Santa Clara whooped up on TCU, 85-66 and it really wasn't that close
St Mary's beat Notre Dame, 62-59

Man, time to break out the West Coast Conference. They are going to be sending multiple teams to the NCAA's at this rate:

Gonzaga - obviously really good
St Mary's - 5-0 with a win over Notre Dame
Santa Clara - also 5-0 with wins over Stanford (by 18), Nevada (by 22) and now TCU (by 19)
San Francisco - 6-0, wins over Nevada & Davidson
BYU - 4-0, wins over #12 Oregon, Cleveland St & San Diego State
Portland - 4-1 but no really notable wins, loss was at Arizona State
Loyola Marymount - 3-2, with wins over SMU & Little Rock, loss to Chattanooga & Florida State
San Diego - 3-2, won at Nevada but losses by 5 @ Cal & by 2 to Cal State Fullerton
Pacific and Pepperdine bring up the rear, but neither is really that bad of a team.

That league may be looking at 4 bids if they continue doing what they are doing.

The "rest" of the WCC has been spending some good money on hoops. Gonzaga has been earning them tournament shares, and the league has been investing pretty wisely. It's good for all involved. Kenpom ratings for the WCC:

1. Gonzaga
27. BYU
36. San Francisco
41. Saint Mary's
73. Santa Clara
86. Loyola Marymount
158. Pacific
160. San Diego
202. Pepperdine
319. Portland

That's four potential tournament teams, two others in the top 100. They could feasibly have 8 of 10 in the top 150 at the end of the year.

The WCC is becoming the Big East of the West.

As much as I dislike rooting for Vermont....I feel like they are the leagues hope to become a mini-Gonzaga on the Lake. They really lift the rest of the league with their consistency and challenge the other programs in the league to keep up.....some do better than others.😉

One of the conditions of Gonzaga staying in the WCC when they had the chance to leave for the MWC is that the rest of the conference has to invest more in basketball then they had before.

OK, if someone finds the ending to the Southern Utah/Yale game, please post it. According to the play by play, Yale hit 2 foul shots to tie the game in OT at 85 with just 2 seconds to go. Evidently just before the buzzer, Swain fouled Knight from Southern Utah, who went on to hit 3 FTs with no time left, giving S. Utah an 88-85 victory. I wonder how controversial of a call this was.

This was on the heels of Southern Utah's last game, where they lost in OT to Cal, but it appears as though a scoring error screwed them. They hit 2 foul shots to take a 9 pt lead at 14:02 left in the 2nd half but only got credited for 1. Evidently that one point proved crucial as the game doesn't go to OT.
