Before we get to today's schedule...um, North Carolina? Hello? What in the name of all that is holy was that demonstration on the court yesterday? I get that Kentucky is pretty good but damn man, the Tar Heels were never in that game. That was ugly.

A few other observations:
  • as mentioned just above, Hofstra took down the Hogs in Little Rock. Very good win for them and the CAA.
  • Providence will definitely climb into the rankings after taking down #20 UConn in Storrs. Man, they play some serious defense.
  • LSU had to make a massive comeback to take down Louisiana in a game they were down 8 at the half.
  • Western Kentucky looked very good in dealing Louisville another loss. As was mentioned in the "coaching carousel" thread, the 'Ville may be looking for another coach at some point in the next few months.
  • Kansas beat SFA by 8 at home, Alabama beat Jacksonville State by 6 at home. Both closer than expected.
  • Purdue pounded the bejesus out of Butler
  • #1 Baylor struggled with Oregon, winning by just 8.
  • Pitt upset St John's, who was without a key player or 2. Still...Pitt is terrible. Bad, bad loss for the Johnnies
  • Missouri got a big win over Utah.
  • Boston Univ lost a tough OT home game to Marist
AND
* Grand Canyon gave San Francisco their first loss of the year in a defensive battle, 49-48.

Hey now just remember they DID earn an NCAA bid by winning the CAA tournament in 2020 but obviously, the tournament was canceled. Mihalich also rebuilt that program and did win 3 CAA regular-season titles, just lost in the conference tournament finals twice.

They haven't become some become some powerhouse but (trigger warning for some here), the CAA is a much more competitive league and they've been quite good in it over the last 6 years, but so goes the life of a one-bid league in that you don't always get the bid.

Jokes aside, CAA was a 16 seed the last 2 tournaments and I suspect Hofstra would've been in the 15-16 range too had NCAA not cancelled two years ago. CAA has been a little better in the last few years prior but this season seems like a wash so far. I am happy Speedy is having some success from the get-go as it's an awkward situation when there are talks to cut ties with a program legend (see Penny, Ewing, etc)

If the AE is Domino’s, then the CAA is Bertucci’s- a more expensive but still mediocre version of same thing.

CAA seeds since 2017 among tournaments played: 12, 13, 13, 16

I'm not sure where "the last two tournaments" came from. Can only judge on what was played.

The difference isn't among top team in the AE or CAA. That usually is a wash. It's the fact that the CAA doesn't generally have some of the absolute worst teams in D1 comprising the bottom 3 of its league year after year, W&M and Elon notwithstanding this year. Also, the league champ doesn't run away with the league title by 3-4 games as has been the case in recent years in the AE. The fact that you can have a top 5 in the league all finish with winning records some years in the CAA (2016, 2017, 2020) and the AE it's happened only once (2017) in the last decade, usually with the 5th place team being 7-9 or something says a lot too about the drop off in quality at the bottom.

But yes, at the end of the day both leagues are a one-bid league and one just might be able to have fancier ingredients than the other does, which makes a difference if you're looking at them side by side, but no difference at all looking at them in the whole of college basketball.

You're right. I misremembered Northeastern as a 16 for some reason

Ugh! It's not looking very cheerful for the in-conference part of the season. It it continues to get worse, as is predicted, I hope the AE will consider at least a bubble "round robin" season with a bubble conference tournament. The forfeit "losses" are going to add up fast the way it is set up now.

Viewing choices are very slim now. If only the BTN, ACC, SEC, PAC-10, etc. would do the right thing and open up their networks to everyone the world would be a better place.

Been a little busy and thus haven't really kept up with this thread like I had hoped, but oh well. Anyway, not much going on tonight. Might as well just tune into the Big Ten Network as that's about the only thing on the airwaves. The TV schedule for tonight:

BTN
7 pm - #24 Wisconsin @ #3 Purdue
9 pm - Maryland @ Iowa

PAC-12
10 pm - Colorado @ Oregon

Looks like ESPN+ only has one game tonight:
7:30 pm - UT Rio Grande Valley @ Sam Houston State

Some other games you might be able to find elsewhere:
5 pm - Alabama State @ Mississippi Valley State
6 pm - Sacramento State @ Oregon State
6 pm - Towson @ Drexel
7:30 pm - Florida A&M @ Bethune-Cookman
8 pm - Washington @ #9 Arizona
8 pm - Dallas Christian @ UTSA
8 pm - Ecclesia College @ Houston Baptist
8:30 pm - Texas Southern @ Southern
8:30 pm - Alabama A&M @ Arkansas-Pine Bluff

That's the extent of the action tonight. 1 game forfeited and 4 games postponed. All the postponed games were conference matchups:

James Madison @ Delaware
Charleston @ Northeastern
UNC-Wilmington @ Hofstra
West Virginia @ TCU

Big 10 had some guys show off some National POY performances last night. Johnny Davis from Wisconsin dropped 37 on Purdue in a win, and Keegan Murray from Iowa dropped 35 to beat Maryland. They are 1-2 in the country right now in scoring with over 20 a game. What's more...Davis is a Wisconsin native and Murray is an Iowa native, both sophomores, and were only role players last year averaging like 7 a game. Depending on draft stock and tourney runs, they feel like cult heroes in the making.

Well, the final undefeated team lost last night as #1 Baylor was beaten at home by #19 Texas Tech. #5 USC also lost last night, at Stanford. That is not a good loss for the Trojans at all.

Meanwhile, Rutgers lost at Penn State by 17. It is crazy how different Rutgers is at home vs on the road. They are polar opposites. I'm not sure I've ever seen a team be so extremely different.

Anyway, quite a few games on the tube tonight as well, beginning with a bang at 6:30 pm with a battle of 2 ranked Big East teams:

FS1

Before I get to today's schedule, which includes several featuring mid-major games, a little recap from yesterday:

Mizzou got absolutely embarassed on TV last night, losing at Arkansas 87-43. Man, I love Cuonzo but that was just awful. Crazy that they can go from upsetting #15 Alabama a few days ago to this.
Some other notes from last night's non-AE action:
  1. Villanova got a nice road win over Xavier
  2. Memphis lost by 10 at Central Florida, dropping to 9-6 overall, 3-2 in the American. Yuck
  3. Utah State fell a little short at Colorado State, 77-72. Mountain West continues to be a fun watch.
  4. UConn got a much needed Big East win over St John's last night
  5. Virginia held off VA Tech, 54-52 in Charlottesville
  6. Duke, THE ONLY RANKED TEAM FROM THE ACC, held off Wake Forest.
I knew the ACC was struggling and down some, but I cannot recall a time when there was only a single team from that league ranked among the nation's top 25 teams. Miami is just outside but nobody else is really sniffing that level. Lunardi currently has 5 ACC teams in the Big Dance, but the last team in, VA Tech, just lost to Virginia while one of the first teams out, Louisville, got beat soundly at home by NC State. The ACC is not doing themselves any favors.

Interesting to note in the American: Memphis was one of the last teams in while Central Florida was in the Next Four out. The win by UCF should give them an advantage over Memphis.

Anyway, here is today's viewing schedule, which is loaded:

FS1
5 pm - #20 Seton Hall @ DePaul
7 pm - Butler @ Georgetown
9 pm - Indiana @ Iowa
11 pm - Colorado @ #6 Arizona

ESPNU
5 pm - Stanford @ Washington State
7 pm - UNC-Asheville @ Winthrop
9 pm - SIU Edwardsville @ Eastern Washington
11 pm - Oregon State @ #5 USC

ESPN2
7 pm - #16 Ohio State @ #13 Wisconsin
9 pm - Georgia State @ South Alabama
11 pm - BYU @ #2 Gonzaga

CBSSN
7 pm - Southern Miss @ Louisiana Tech
9 pm - Rice @ Western Kentucky
11 pm - Loyola Marymount @ San Francisco

ESPN
9:30 - Oregon @ #3 UCLA

ESPN+ streaming:
6 pm - Boston Univ @ Army

7 pm start time
Oklahoma State @ #19 Texas Tech (Big XII/ESPN+)
Lafayette @ Loyola (MD)
Lehigh @ Bucknell
American @ Holy Cross
Colgate @ Navy
UTSA @ Old Dominion
North Texas @ Marshall
Florida Atlantic @ Middle Tennessee St
UTEP @ Charlotte
Wright State @ Robert Morris
Northern Kentucky @ Youngstown State
Oakland @ Cleveland State
Detroit Mercy @ Purdue Fort Wayne
VMI @ Mercer
UNC Greensboro @ The Citadel

7:30 pm - Florida International @ UAB

8 pm start time
Tennessee State @ Murray State
Austin Peay @ Belmont
Sam Houston State @ Lamar
Chicago State @ UT Rio Grande Valley
UIC @ Milwaukee
IUPUI @ Green Bay
UL Monroe @ Texas State
Louisiana @ UT-Arlington
Denver @ South Dakota
Western Illinois @ North Dakota

9 pm start time
Southern Utah @ Montana
Idaho @ Weber State
Abilene Christian @ Grand Canyon
Tarleton @ New Mexico State

10 pm start time
UC-Santa Barbara @ Long Beach State
Cal State Northridge @ Cal State Fullerton
UC-Riverside @ Cal Poly

11:59 - UC-Irvine @ Hawai'i

ESPN3 streaming
6:30 pm - Coastal Carolina @ Appalachian State
7 pm - Canisius @ Niagara

Other games today:
4:30 pm - Florida Gulf Coast @ Kennesaw State
8:30 pm - South Dakota State @ Omaha
10 pm - Portland @ San Diego
11 pm - St Mary's @ Pepperdine

So, if you cannot find anything to watch on TV or stream on the laptop/phone, you have issues. There are so many options, especially at the 7 pm time slot.

Have a great day all!
