This whole thing is absolutely absurd...not only for what was done to the lesser sport but who puts on fireworks in the middle of a day?

Laughable to say the least. I get it, no one give a flying duck about field hockey but still. Cold!

The only thing surprising about Kent State's debacle of a weekend was that the football team managed to squeak out an overtime win against their FCS opponent.

Temple should complain.

Maine should thank their lucky stars. Somehow, a nationally ranked Maine team found it's way into double overtime against a team that was winless in 2018.

The game now goes into the books as an exhibition -- Maine dodged a bullet, big time.

Clearly pecking order dynamics are in play, even if it's not quite the "Football Team Tells Field Hockey Team To Make Them A Sammitch" event some are looking to package it as. I don't think Kent State would have put its own field hockey team in that situation. But "neutral site field hockey contest" is about as low a rung as you can find while still being on the ladder.

But pretty piss poor event management on the part of the KSU athletic department. This feels like a super avoidable situation. Here's the nice thing about field hockey: generally speaking, you know how long it could take. There aren't a ton of stoppages, so estimating a max game time (regulation and 2 OTs) is fairly accurate. Find your hard out time, rewind from there. Starting the game at 8AM (as opposed to the scheduled 9AM) probably would have preemptively fixed this.

Definitely some unanswered questions. Not sure why the fire marshal needed the area clear 90 minutes prior to (what was presented as) a fairly minor fireworks show. Considering the amount of potential time remaining (10 minutes max), not sure why they could not have just continued the game post-fireworks (as opposed to the post-football game option that was presented). Also, not sure why the NCAA opted to declare the game an exhibition as opposed to a tie, which I would think would be very much within its abilities.
