OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- California star Leon Powe is far from ready to make a decision about whether to return to the Golden Bears for his junior season or declare himself eligible for the NBA draft.

"It's 50-50," Powe said Tuesday night of his decision after throwing out the ceremonial first pitch before the Oakland Athletics hosted the New York Yankees.
"It's just a matter of what's best for me and my family," he said. "If it's stay in school, I'll stay in school. I have no problem coming back to Cal
Everyone figured he would take his time with this decision, because of his knee injuries. Im sure he wants to see what the scouts say about his game and his draft position. I really think if he works out he will move into the 1st round. He has a great offensive game, is a good rebounder, and a pretty good free throw shooter. The only problem is his knees, if he comes back to Cal and hurts one of them again, he might not make it to the NBA, or if he does it wont be for a few years.

Obviously if he comes back Cal is another Pac-10 team to worry about and he will lead them to the NCAA's.

well i dont want to hijack this thread but i also dont want to start another one so i'll just post here about potential UCLA defections. Afflalo said himself he expects to be back next year, its looking very unlikely that he will leave. Farmar will throw himself into a couple camps and he wants to get evaluated. If he is a certain first rounder, he will consider entering. If not he is definitely coming back. He is still a bit raw for the NBA game and this looks like a pretty solid draft for point guards. There are already reports of Marcus Williams, Aaron Gray, PJ Tucker, etc. entering the draft. Plus many other possible underclassmen could declare (Gibson, Washington Jr, etc.)

The smart money is on Farmar staying as well, but he did have a pretty good tournament run this past month. Afflalo did not have a good tournament run and thats probably a big reason why he is staying.

I agree, I think Afflalo would have liked to come out this year, but he just didnt put together a good NCAA tournament. Farmar will be a solid NBA point guard, because he knows how to run an offense effectively. Next year with Shipp, Afflalo, and Farmar as the guards/forwards, UCLA will be able to put together a nice offense.
Powe needs to come out IMO. He's almost 23 years of age and so unless he really wants to finish his degree he should come out.

On second thought, this guy has been through so much, maybe he should stay and get his degree. I don't think he'll be a good pro because of his height. The knee injuries took away a lot of his explosiveness.
Cal's Powe still undecided on NBA Draft

BERKELEY — Cal basketball star Leon Powe is likely to make an announcement about the NBA Draft next week but still has not made up his mind, his closest friend said Friday.

"Right now, it's still 50-50," said Bernard Ward, Powe's mentor and unofficial godfather. "We're trying to gather information."
It's gotta be a tough decisison, becuase Cal will be good next season with him. I think he is better then a 2nd rounder as most mock drafts have him going. However, does coming back for another season increase his value? Look at the numbers he put up this year, they arent going to get much better.

So, the only reason I see him going back to college, is if he is being told his stock is going nowhere. Therefore, he goes back to enjoy his last season and perhaps play on the best Cal team since Kidd and Shareef.

I just do not want to see him blow out his knee again. He is such a hard worker and a good person, I want to see him succeed in the NBA. On the other hand, I dont want to have to face a front line of Powe and Hardin again.

Draft next year will be better. That coupled with what you said means (most likely) his stock goes no where. Poor kid. He was supposed to be bound for stardom until those stinkin injuries.
Powe will announce his decision sometime today. He has his knee examined by doctors yesterday.

Can't say I have any idea what he will do, but I know what he should do... Declare, atleast guage the interest in his stock, not to mention it gives him more time to decide if he wants to come back to Cal or not.
FoxSports - California Sophomore Leon Powe will enter the NBA Draft, but won't hire an agent, giving him an opportunity to return to school for his Junior season.

No agent being the good news.
