Cubs sign Scott Eyre to 3 year, 11 mil deal

Cubs add free agent reliever Eyre
Southpaw leaves Giants for two-year contract
By Carrie Muskat / MLB.com

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs added a lefty to the bullpen mix on Thursday, signing free agent Scott Eyre to a two-year contract with a player option for a third year.

Eyre, 33, was 2-2 with a 2.63 ERA in a career-high 86 games with the San Francisco Giants, striking out 65 over 68 1/3 innings. Left-handers hit .182 against him last season, while right-handers didn't fare much better, batting .213. He did better on the road, posting a 1.30 ERA away from home compared to 4.01 ERA in San Francisco.

Eyre and Cubs manager Dusty Baker were together in 2002 in San Francisco. The Giants had claimed him off waivers, and the lefty was impressive, posting a 1.59 ERA in 21 games.

Cubs agree to terms with free-agent reliever Eyre

CHICAGO (AP) -- Free-agent reliever Scott Eyre agreed to terms on a two-year, $11 million contract with the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.

Financial terms of the deal, which includes a player option for the 2008 season, were still being negotiated.

"We haven't worked all that out yet," Eyre's agent Tommy Tanzer said. "There is going to be a signing bonus."

The Cubs said Eyre will be introduced at a news conference Friday at Wrigley Field.

Eyre's contract calls for up to $300,000 a year in performance bonuses. He will receive $100,000 for 70 appearances and an additional $200,000 if he pitches in 80 games. There is also wording that would give Eyre additional money should he become the Cubs' closer.

I just checked out the MVP voting this year and was surprised to see Eyre's name on it.

Don't know much about him.... but we did need a lefty specialist.

Great signing, but I agree that we somewhat overpaid for him. Although, adding Eyre and Furcal would be a pretty good first two signings.
