A matter of when, not if. No surprise. Who's next?

http://tracking.si.com/2012/11/11/derek-dooley-fired-tennessee-football/?eref=twitter_feed

Derek Dooley will be fired as the head football coach at the University of Tennessee after this season, according to a report on Tennessee-focused Rivals site volquest.com.

Dooley has been under increasing scrutiny throughout this season, his third in charge of the Volunteer football program. His team is winless in the Southeastern conference and owns a 4-6 record overall. The team’s last loss to SEC newcomer Missouri was especially bad – Tennessee held a two touchdown lead, but allowed the Tigers to rally back. Missouri won the game 51-48 after four overtimes.

The Volunteers have a 15-20 record in three seasons with Dooley at the helm, with a 4-18 mark against SEC competition.

I don't think Missouri is even close to firing its coach yet.

Charlie Strong to Tennessee, right? Throw a ton of money. Make him turn it down.

Just tired of Pinkel. He raised the program, sure. This year's performance erases a lot of what he did however.

In 3 years at Tennessee, Derek Dooley has accounted for 9.3% of UT's all-time SEC losses.

I have a buddy who's a big Tennessee fan who tried to tell me FSU would suck as much as Tennessee if they were in the SEC. I pointed out that Jimbo and Dooley are both in their 3rd years at their respective programs, and if FSU beats UF again in a couple weeks they'll have as many SEC victories (4) over these 3 years as Tennessee does. 4-0 as opposed to 4-18 (and we don't get to play Vandy, Kentucky, etc.)

He probably thought the Aggies would struggle in the SEC as well, right? It's just a cop out that fans of a conference use to denigrate teams from other conferences. Obviously, each conference is somewhat different and there will usually be an adjustment period for teams but for the most part, programs that are well run and historically successful will do well and programs that are not will continue to struggle. FSU would do just fine in the SEC. They'd probably have to adjust their recruiting somewhat but they're more than capable of doing that.

Derek Dooley will not return as Tennessee's coach, the school announced on Sunday.

The process for hiring a replacement will begin immediately, and Dooley will not coach the Volunteers' final game of the season at home against Kentucky on Nov. 24. Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney will serve as the interim coach for that game.

"I am sorry we could not generate enough wins to create hope for a brighter future," Dooley said in a statement released by the school. "Although progress was not reflected in our record, I am proud of the strides we made to strengthen the foundation for future success in all areas of the program.

"During the last 34 months, I've given my all for Tennessee, and our family appreciates all this university and the Knoxville community has given us."
Press conference today at 2pm EST.

4-19 in the SEC, ouch. The guy completely lost control of the team, if he ever had it to begin with.

Of course he's to blame for being terrible, but holy crap he has some shitty kids as his "stars". Bray is one of the biggest punks I've seen in a while and a terrible leader. Justin Hunter checked out, Da'Rick Rogers couldn't even stay on the team, Cordarrelle Patterson is dumb as a rock. One of the worst defenses in football. It just killed me to see those guys talking smack to freakin' Vanderbilt yesterday up 7-3 and acting like morons. 4 SEC wins in 3 years is pathetic, as is losing to Kentucky like they did last year and getting pummeled by Vanderbilt as they did yesterday. That's not even to mention being tied at the half with Akron and trailing at home against Troy late in the 4th quarter. This is a terrible, terrible football team and a program in absolute disarray.

Supposedly, Gruden is the #1 choice. Don't see him going to college, but honestly hope he does. Would be interesting to watch.

Tennessee: Sources tell us that Jon Gruden remains the primary target. Although we have not verified, sources tell us that Gruden, among other things, has requested a $4 million salary pool for his assistants. Not sure how that works out but we are told that Tennessee will be having discussions with Butch Jones as well.

Gruden is not going to Tennessee. Vols are living in a fantasy land. They'll be lucky if Cutcliffe wants to leave Duke for that tire fire.

Did you see their list on Volquest? The candidates are all pipe dreams. It's a bunch of guys that already have better jobs than Tennessee head coach.

I'd rather have Kirby Smart than 1/2 of that list anyway, but for some reason he isn't on their radar.
