I think your AD sealed your fate when he said looking for a home for the football program only. You could easily go MAC or C-USA all sports and offer something. As a lot of us have said, we'd hate to see UMass leave, but if you want any semblance of success, and butts in the seats for FBS football, you need a conference.

CUSA all sports would be bad. MAC would be acceptable. Fans don't necessarily want to leave the A10, but a lot of us are to the point where we're wondering "why are we handicapping football for the sake of basketball when we're not even doing anything in basketball?"

However, as you said, publicly saying "We're only bringing out football team, here's our packet for CUSA" and then probably being rejected from CUSA on that would be a terrible look for the MAC. Apparently their preferred setup would have been WKU and UMass all sports (to keep the divisions of East/West as they are, and also UMass > MTSU as a university in general, regardless of sports). But the administration wanted no part of even hearing what that could have been.

Apparently there's talk of a GOR, which is holding up MTSU and WKU a bit, at 15 years. That would represent a 10 year increase on their current media deal with ESPN, which increases every year (and is apparently currently at over $2 million/year per university).

You all fit the profile of the MAC, no doubt. And the MAC is strong in Olympic/non-revenue sports, as is UMass. And they're mediocre at FB and BB, as is UMass. Hehe. Just trying to keep the mood light.

Hey, maybe a couple of the Western MAC schools will fold up sports and they'll need a backfill who can provide the same level of competitiveness.

Eastern Michigan University can be replaced with: "Eastern, Massachusetts...U?"

There is some speculation in CAA country that the SoCon is trying to entice Charleston, Elon, William & Mary, and UNCW into joining. Richmond football, then, would join the SoCon. If that happens... wow. Hofstra, Northeastern, Drexel, Delaware, and Towson might be looking at a merger with the America East. That's a lot of "ifs", but this stuff interests the shit out of me.

Who would sponsor the 8 remaining teams in Football?

Nevermind: 4 are in America East, Delaware & Towson join, URI & Nova as football only?

UMass is not dropping down to FCS.
This. They're all in. We can bitch about UMass shitting on their Athletics program in pursuit of FBS all we want, but at the end of the day, they are committed to major college football. The only way this makes any sense, for scheduling, fans, boosters, TV, money, etc. is to get that program into an FBS conference. UMass supporters should be banging down the AD's door to grovel at the shores of Lake Erie for an invite to the MAC - all sports.

It's a tiring one that we hear on a near daily basis as UMass fans. At the realignment forum it's even gotten to the point where fans of other schools get annoyed by it and tell people to stop making it.
The joke is less about UMass football and much more so about the landscape where these bottom tier conferences pilfering absolute joker programs.

Still annoying as absolute hell to be hearing the same shit every day.
Which realignment board do you read?

Is there a reason the NCAA doesn’t allow the football-only leagues? You could have a really nice east coast collaboration between UMass, UConn, Delaware, Temple, Army, Navy, James Madison, and Old Dominion.

Some actual sports media people post there occasionally as well, but not as often as we'd all like for sure.

As for the why? Not entirely sure what led to it, but it was determined at some point that FBS leagues needed to be all-sports leagues for the member institutions, and that it required a minimum of 8 FBS (so including football) all-sports members. It probably was initially put in place to prevent absolute super leagues of the top football teams that would dominate ratings and revenues...but that seems to not have worked out anyway.

Once UAB and Southern Miss leave, not a single founding member of CUSA will remain. At least we have UMass and GW (and Duquesne for all but one year).
