Save the trade for next season?

I just don't really know what BC can stir up in the trade market this offseason but I have my doubts, cap space or not, and am more than a little reluctant to trade away our pick. Trading down might make sense, we'll see. I think I'd prefer to draft the best player and spend our cap space on players.

The trade scenario that is starting to excite me involves Alvin Williams, not in a trade, but as salary cap relief mid season. A lot here depends on doctors and how injured or so one has to be to be deemed unable to play in the NBA. One one side we have Mike James vouching for Alvin, basically saying that he can play in NBA games. On the other we have Alvin completely rehabbed and not smelling the court.

I personally think that Alvin will be willing to retire once his player option is exercised. Never playing in any games is no one's idea of a good time, especially when your money is already sealed up and you could be home with your family. If he doesn't already know what his non-retirement would cost the franchise that has already payed him millions up millions, BC will let him know. So it comes down to doctors- Alvin's knees will be sore, and playing will cause pain- is this enough to retire? I don't know how bad chronic injuries have to be nor how bad Alvin's pain actually is but that's where the matter SHOULD lie.

Which brings us back to the trade. If Alvin retires we suddenly go from being capped out (presuming that BC goes on a proper spree with what little we have) to being $6,800,000 under the cap. As far as I know, and do correct me if I'm wrong, this means that we can trade with a team that is over the cap and take back that much more. That basically means that we could trade Eric Williams (an expiring contract) for a player being paid 11 million. I have no idea who we'd want that get paid that much but it re-opens a lot of doors in terms of flexibility. Team will be looking to dump salary and maybe even tank for Greg Oden. If we were the only team with such flexibility the engine would be primed for Colangelo to start wheeling and dealing.

Wishful thinking? Maybe, but I'm sure Colangelo has considered the same thing.

God dammit, could a mod please move this to the Raptors forum. Thanks.
You almost have to be dead for your contract to come off the cap. Alvin could play today. The doctors will agree with that. You don't have to be able to play well or play a full season.

Retirement doesn't change anything either. See Hakeem, Montross, Jamal Mashburnk, Shawn Bradley.

No escape.
i still lol at all of those crazy trade ideas raps fans would come up with for mopete and AW. The greatest part was that some fans actually believed in it would they would type some post about trading the two of them for an allstar caliber player
You can get relief, but you have to apply to the L for it, and it won't kick in until the next year.
Finding a way to get rid of Williams's contract is nice but the priority should be finding a center and a PG who can play every day and produce. After that, it's all about putting together a quality bench. Colangelo should be able to deal Eric Williams's expiring contract to someone who wants him (probably not until the deadline, though) so perhaps Mitchell should play him for the first couple of months to drum up interest? Who knows?

Anyway, I don't see any true helpers at 5 (or wherever the Raptors will pick) and the Raptors have enough young talent. Time to add vets to the kiddie core and take serious steps forward.
Better to make no move at all than to force one based on a limited array of options. Our team should do better next year without major roster retooling anyways.

i think you mentioned this is the other thread, but next year we wont have any capspace to make any significant moves with, and we dont have the pieces to make an outright trade next year, Bosh will be the only raptor earning in double (eight) figures the rest of them wil be making in the 3-6 range, so do to our limited roster salary, what could we get done that would make us significantly better? and as for our capspace, if we resign Bosh that will take a major part of our cap space away, meaning that if we want to make use of that capspace we need to sign or take on salary this year and then re-sign Bosh so he doesnt take up that space and we go over the cap to sign him. We essentially have to get our final "playoff, or contending personel" together this year and let them grow together into that contending team, or else we will be stuck in mediocrity for another who knows how long.

I've confused myself.

Somebody tell me when Bosh's extention would kick in--summer '07 or summer '08.

I'll get back to you when I know the answer.
Summer '07. According to Larry ****:

A rookie scale contract for a first round draft pick may be extended from the day following the July moratorium to the October 31 preceding the player's last option season, provided the team had previously picked up the option for that season.
2006-07 is Bosh's last option year, Babcock picked up the option for that a while ago. Therefore we can extend him this summer and the extension kicks in next summer.

if we sign Bosh to an extentsion this summer, it would kick in after next season....when his rookie contract would expire....but Bosh's extension would kick in on July 31st when the moratorium is lifted and free agents are allowe to sign, so leaving us with no capspace, rigth?

I'm pretty sure it kicks in right away if the player hasn't played for more than a calendar year.
Maybe if they don't get Pryzbilla, Ratliff may come as an option... A Theo+Blake+Ha+Detroit pick for Alvin Williams, Eric Williams and Hoffa may works well for both teams... Portland may be a good scenario for Hoffa, while they can send E-Will elsewhere... Alvin will stuck their cap, like Theo is doing for now... For the Raps, Theo can help immediately with his shotblocking ability and his experience... Ha is a young big project C, while Blake is a serviceable PG that can get some minutes in this team...

You're all about trades, eh dude?

In some foruns (Like the Raps one), yeah... Like I've said in other situations, someone already express most of my comments and opinions (about games and players) and I wouldn't be redundant, saying the same things... So, in the bigger time in this forum, I write trade ideas... just simple as that!

I think you still have to fill in the paperwork and have him checked by league doctors. Also, that could be moot: didn't he play a game at the beginning of this season?

Not even John Nash is stupid enough to trade someone useful for two people who basically don't play anymore and one who is terrible. Now, Isiah Thomas on the other hand....
