Sleeper teams who can beat contenders in Playoffs

1552 Views 36 Replies 24 Participants Last post by  AJC NYC
The teams who can upset a contender in the playoffs has happened before will it happen again?
Perhaps this season's playoffs,if it does happen what teams could be good enough to do so

The contenders in the west are:
Spurs
Mavericks
Suns

The contenders in the east are:
Pistons
Heat

Are there any teams out there that can eliminate them in the playoffs?
If so name some teams and say why are they good enough to pull an upset

If LA Lakers gets into the playoffs, then Ill pick them as the dark horse from the west. LAL seems to play really good against upper echelon teams and losses badly against sub 500 ones.

East? I really dont see any other team in the East beating either a Miami or Detroit in a 7 game series. Maybe Indiana as long as they have a healthy Jermaine O'Neal back.

In the west i think the kings can cause some problems and maybe the clippers if they get hot again. In the east I think indiana and new jersey can be a tough out.
If LA gets the last seed & Mavs have the top seed then Kobe can go ape on them like in a couple of games they played this year.
New Jersey won't do **** against MIA or DET.

I wanna see IND-MIA in the ECF but I don't think that's gonna happend

*cries...
For the West, the Clippers could upset a few teams. For the East, the Nets are the most likely to upset someone.

Cippers- Elton Brand is putting up MVP numbers and is about to lead the Clippers to their first playoff appearance since 1997. They have an experienced point guard in Sam Cassell and Chris Kaman has improved significantly since last year. If they finish #6, they have a good shot to beat the Nuggets.

Nets- Jason Kidd is finally playing like his old self. With Carter scoring 25+ and Nenad Krstic and Richard Jefferson helping out, they can go deep into the playoffs. Keep in mind that the Nets have beaten Miami twice this year with Vince scoring 51 in Miami. They also beat Detroit once this year so they can beat anyone on any given day.

Kings would be the obvious choice i think, they have been on fire lately and they have some big time players on that team.
on paper they can match up with any team in the L really well, it just depends if they can bring it for a 7 game series come play off time
One team that could make some unexpected noise, is the Celtics. They match up well with MIA and DET very, VERY well. We almost always play right along with both teams and the only team the C's will play will be either Miami or Detroit if they get in.

Truthfully though, I'd much rather have Boston play for the lottery and pick up ANOTHER young gun.
Nuggets to NBA championship.

HAHAHAHA! And I thought MY post was crazy.
Nobody will upset the Spurs. Barring any serious injury to Duncan, San Antonio will win the NBA title again this season.

The Wizards could possibly upset either the Heat or Pistons in the playoffs.

Denver MIGHT could beat Dallas in the first round but I seriously doubt it. No upsets look likely out of the West, but I suppose anything is possible in the East.
Depends, which team is jelling or on a streak going into the playoffs. In the West, I have to go with the Kings as my first choice. In the East, Washington is my first pick and then I have to say Indy.

very good analysis. I agree with both selections.

But the Clippers beating the Nuggets can't be called an upset. Right now the Clipper have a better record than the Nuggets, and that might still be true at the end of the season.
Whoever gets out of the 4/5 series could give Detroit a battle. Indiana because they are gunning for Detroit specificially. Cleveland because they matchup well with the Pistons. And Washington for the same reason. All of those teams have frontlines to cause worry.

And if the Bucks get their act together, they'll give the Pistons troube in the first round.

Remember, the Cavs could have Hughes back for the playoffs. Hughes/Bron/Murry is a triumverate to go right at Billups/Hamilton/Prince.

Both 1 seeds in both conferences have the toughest roads to the finals thanks to the way the NBA has done the seeding.
Spurs-Mavs in round two, means someone is getting through to the WCF who wasn't expected.

I hate how the playoffs are now set up with the top two teams meeting up in the semifinals.

The division leader should be a lock for a playoff spot, but I disagree with the fact that it has to be a top 3 seed.

Keep in mind that the Clippers haven't made the playoffs in 9 years so every NBA analyst will think that they will lose no matter who they play so technically, it would be an upset.

I think Denver's going to be the 3rd seed and Mavs will be either 1st or 4th so they're not going to face in the first round.

True... the Clipper's turnaround this season is extraordinary, but the regular season and postseason are two different things.
Well the nets have beaten the Heat twice this season and it should have been three if it wasnt for the Refs being **********s
We blew out the Pistons this year
and the nets have never really have as much problems with the Pistons as do the rest of the league the nets matchup well against both teams
