And they couldn't get to the finals? Just those two seem like a setup for one of the best defensive teams ever. I just thought about that watching this HOF rerun...what was their GM doing

Rodman was a total headcase at the time... and while I love Rodman (especially his Bulls years) I think he's actually become a bit overrated on these forums. He was a specialist, especially at that point of his career where he'd truly abandoned any attempt at playing offense (beyond being a decent passer and crashing the boards)... the perfect role player, but a role player.

FOH...don't start that overrated mess. 16 rebounds a game? Who's playing that role before or since?

And like I said they could've been the crux of a historic defense. No one's overrating anybody

Also, the Spurs didn't have a PG Rodman's first year... they drafted Avery Johnson and won 62 games the next year

He was arguably the greatest rebounder ever, don't get me wrong... but he was never anything better than the 3rd best player on a championship team, that's more my point. People seem to speak about Rodman with the same reverence they do with the top 50 players ever... he had lost a little bit of lateral quickness and was a role player and a specialist at that point, I'm sorry, but it is true.

Still a role player, and as Dornado stated one of the best role players ever... Rodman was the missing piece of the championship Puzzle in Detroit and filled that same role in Chicago... you dont build a team around dennis rodman, you fill in the rest of your lineup and let him come in and do what he does best, rebound and defend

Rodman was a total distraction in San Antonio. He wasn't happy and he was trying to get out of there the entire time he was down there.

They were just a speed bump for Hakeem.

Like said before, Rodamn was not in the right mindset in San Antonio. He would show up out of shape, late to games, no motivation and constantly had issues with coaching/staff on the Spurs.

When Rodman got traded to the Bulls, the Spurs just wanted to unload him. It took a lot of work on the coaching staff and players (Jordan/Pippen) to get Rodman to act somewhat "normal" and buy into the team effort.

That and well, the one year they really should have won the Finals they ran into Hakeem which ultimately destroyed Robinson's legacy.

You are underrating how big of a cancer he was on that team. He was literally uncoachable and openly defiant. Theres also a reason why as great as he was his two teams post Phil Jackson outright waived him before the playoffs.

Poppovich (said GM) built a pretty good roster around those two. Sean Elliot was a good second option. Avery was a very solid point guard. Of course that second year Rodman was suspended 10 games or whatever it was for kicking the cameraman.

And people just say that roleplayer shit because he didn't put up points. He was defensively dominant and dominant on the boards. If he's a roleplayer then everyone's a roleplayer in a very literal interpetation...when I think specialist/roleplayer I think of someone who does their thing in limited opportunities, not a complete anchor like Rodman had the potential to be defensively and on the boards.

Y'all wouldn't call a plain jane 20 ppg scorer a roleplayer. Allan Houston for instance wasn't considered a roleplayer but who would rank him before Rodman?

Was it Craig Sager who used to tell the story about the Pistons having someone who would be employed to get Rodman out of strip clubs in time for the games and practice? I guess San Antonio either didn't have that guy or they didn't have enough strip clubs.

Not sure. But I do remember the story of him in the palace parking lot after practice blasting pearl jam with his shirt off, loaded shotgun in hand and contemplating suicide.

And even if it was true no one was specifically hired to do that shit. A ball boy or low level scout/whatever might have had to to that a couple times, but romanticism like that is what takes retarded speculation to the next level.

I don't know, the Bulls employed Jack Haley for an entire season just be Rodman's babysitter... I think he played in 1 game that year.
