LBJ to LJ for 3 said:
No kidding Rondo is an upgrade at PG than Snow, DJ is an upgrade compared to Snow and DJ isnt even a good point guard. I was just saying we need a PG that can do more than just play defense. We need a PG who can attack the basket and atleast be respected as a scorer. And as of right now i could see teams doin the samething they do too Eric as they will do to Rondo let him shoot 17 footers.

Obviously Rondo is an upgrade, anyone with fresher legs than Esnow is an upgrade. The way Lebron is playing and with Hughes back we could get away with a athletic defensive point guard. But we all know as fans before we had Flip and Larry was injuried it was like pulling teath out there because no one besides Lebron could creat for themselves and score. And At that time It looked like we needed a PG that can take someone off the dribble and creat for himself and for the team.
Well I was just checking to see if you really thought he would be an upgrade, because you compared him to a younger Eric Snow. If there is anything Rondo can do on offense it is attack the basket. This is from ESPN's scouting report on Rondo

A quick point guard with an excellent ability to drive ... Penetrates and breaks people down off the dribble ... A prolific distributor ... Has great hands and vision
There is your answer right there. The Cavs need a PG who can distribute and create, that is exactly what Rondo is. Not to mention he is one of the best defenders in college basketball. I dont think you are going to find a better fit at PG then Rondo.

Rondo is really sounding like a terrific PG, but im a little worried he will be taken before the cavs have a chance to draft him. If he really IS the top of the PG class then why wont other teams take a gamble on him?

Like someone said teams will let him shoot the 17 footer, but hes under 22, so hes got ALOT of time to develop the J, plus in the half court offense Rondo/LBJ /hughes will ALL be handling the rock ,its not like lebron wont be distributing and larry wont he breaking people's ankles.

Rondo is a tough kid whos got AI like handles and body controll, and a guy with great quickness and speed can really help this team.

Actually what the Cavs need is a point guard who can defend and shoot the spot up jumper. Hughes, Bron, and Murray can all distribute and create just fine. In addition to the kick outs that Z does. Just be able to defend quick point guards, and knock down an open shot now and again.
Any point guards like that in the draft?

Well numerous scouting reports have rondo as a very good defender so thats pretty good. I agree we do need a pg that can shoot. ( GOD Im still sad we couldnt sign duhon last year.. he got a 2 yr 6 mill deal from the bulls >.< ) But when you see a kid like rondo and hes avaiable when your team is in need of a 1 guard, then you dont think twice about drafting him.

Enough talk of rondo though, im not sure if we'll be able to get him, some sites have him ranked top 15 , some top 20 and even top 25... so its up in the air.

IF rondo is taken before the cavaliers have a chance to get him who else do we have on the radar?

I don't think there's any question Rondo is our guy. We need to start forming a defensive identity in our young core, and a defensive backcourt of Rondo/Hughes is pretty damn solid.

Add in an improving Lebron, and AV and we have a nice defensive team. Still need a shotblocking presence at the 5, which is what we should target in the 2nd round. So Rondo, defensive big, and maybe a Euro talent with the other 2nd rounder? That would be a great draft.

Then we'd have to decide what to with Gooden, Flip, and the MLE.

Really if Rondo, Williams, or Collins are gone you would probably draft another position. I do not know ifs Darius Washington is declaring or not , but if he or Farmar enter that would slide another PG down to you. Dee Brown could be a good pick, but he isnt the best defender. He has the quickness and speed to become a good defender, but he is small and is not consistant at PG. He tends to either score alot or create for his teammates, not both.

There could be a few interesting big men left like Armstrong, Davis, or Millsap.

Watching Barbosa, he would be a perfect fit on this team at PG. Great spot up shooter, can push the tempo, solid defender (long arms), young. Also a teammate of Varejao on the Brazilian team.

I wonder what it would take to get him? Suns could use a rebounder like Gooden for one. I could see them liking Sasha also. Would have to be a S&T since he's locked up for 2 more seasons.

I dont think the Suns will let anyone near Barbosa. He is the heir aparent to nash when he retires or slows down. Barbosa can play PG, but to me seems like more of a SG. He can fill it up in a hurry and he is one the the most important players on the Suns roster, because he provides that spark off the bench.

To me it seems the Barbosa would take shots away from LeBron, Hughes, and Z. I think the Cavs need more of a pure PG to distribute the ball so LeBron doesnt have to create for everyone all the time, but thats just my opinion.

Unless the Cavs can get a Steve Nash, there's not many point guards who can distribute the ball better than Lebron and Larry Hughes. I think the best move is a guy like Barbosa who is a proven commodity in the NBA just waiting for his opportunity to shine. He's fast, he defends, and he's a score first point guard, which is what we need. I would rather see Lebron's ppg drop down into the 27 range and be well over 50 percent shooting, along with a high number of assists and rebounds. If we can get the team going so that they play more like the Suns or a Euro team, where there is constant movement and passing on offense, and we really push the break, then we could be the new showtime. But you have to have the guns. I honestly don't see why Drew Gooden couldn't get us Barbosa if Danny really wanted to go that route. It's not like Phoenix is really looking for a Nash replacement for a few years.

You know what would be a trip though. Boris Diaw as the new point guard. Just tossing that thought out there. That would be a lot of fun.

But yeah, I would think Gooden and Sasha, and then Phoenix maybe tosses in a future second rounder with Barbosa, and we call it a deal. Not sure how to make the money work, but hey, that's why they pay Danny the big bucks.

If you get Barbosa, you can focus on drafting a backup big man in the draft, which I think is what this ****ty ****ty draft is strong in. Power forwards of the backup level. I know Splitter is ranked high on a lot of draft boards, but so was Marty. Wonder if he could slip far enough in the first round for Danny to grab him? We could go brazillian for 07.

Also Rudy Fernandez is out there at the two guard if we deal Sasha for Barbosa.
