DETROIT - In past years, it might have been easy for the Red Sox to look past a game against the Detroit Tigers in anticipation of a four-game series against the New York Yankees in the Bronx.
After serving as doormats of the American League for nearly a dozen years, however, the revived Tigers entered the weekend with the best record in baseball, diminishing any notion they would serve as the Sox’ sparring partner before the feature bout.
Yesterday, the Sox prepared for the latest round against their bitter rivals in the most appropriate way, beating Detroit for the second time in three games behind solid pitching from Matt Clement and well-timed bursts of power. They matched a season high with four home runs and left town with an 8-3 victory at Comerica Park.
