The Patriot League has officially cleared American's Stephen Lumpkins to play next season. Lumpkins returned to AU last month after leaving school prior to the 2011-12 season to pursue a baseball career as a relief pitcher in the Kansas City Royals' organization. Because he was a pro in another sport (baseball, obviously), he can't be on scholarship next season at AU and will be a walk-on. But a walk-on that was second-team all-PL after his junior season, shooting 59 percent from the floor and averaging 13.5 points and 8.2 boards.

We're glad to have Lump back at AU!

Normally the PL leadership would vote on this at their November meeting, which would be a bit late for the start of the basketball season, so glad to see the decision was fast-tracked. With Lumpkins cleared and Rutgers transfer Austin Carroll (hopefully) being cleared to play right away, AU could easily be in the top half of the conference this season and potentially steal a game or two from Lehigh or Bucknell.

Here's an interesting take on the story, although one that doesn't necessarily consider why this decision might have been even more significant in the PL as opposed to other conferences: http://www.cbssports.com/collegebas...ins-returns-to-college-basketball-150k-richer
