of Coach's vs. Cancer with an 88-54 victory over San Jose St.

The Red Raiders started a little slowly, they didn't have any scouting for SJS since it was a first year head coach and they were loaded with new players too. About ten minutes into the game though, TT took over and just overwhelmed the Spartans with their motion offense and pressure defense.

Jay Jackson led all scorers with 17 points, newcomers John Plefka and Terry Martin added 15 and 13 repectively. Darryl Dora and Martin Zeno both reached double figures as well with 12 and 11 points. Jackson and Martin combined to shoot 5 of 6 from 3-point range as the Red Raiders finished the game with 9 of 18 from behind the arc.

San Jose had two guys score 10 each to lead the Spartans in scoring. Just as a point of reference, I'd say San Jose St. is a team at about the level of talent like Kansas this year. ;)

Seriously.....good to get out of the gate with a win. We'll face Georgia Southern tomorrow, as they trashed Portland in the opening game of the Lubbock regional. Tomorrow's winner will advance to New York and face off against Syracuse (most likely). Texas Tech looked good...but I don't think San Jose St. will be challenging for the WAC title this year either....so we'll have to wait and see how we look against guys with similar ability as we have. Tomorrow's game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Coach said the Jon Plefka is as good a first year player he's had at Texas Tech, which is pretty good praise considering Kasib Powell, Jay Jackson, and Martin Zeno were all first year players. Singled out Dora and Zeno as needing to play better than they did against San Jose St. Liked the energy and lift Terry Martin and Dior Lowhorn provided off the bench....Martin hit a three right off the bench and Dior grabbed 8 rebounds in 15 minutes of play.

He also said that Justin Wilkerson will redshirt this year due to incoming weight problem...he was 6-8+ 180'ish. Said he thinks Justin has the talent to be an all-conference player, but needs a year to put on some muscle....since arriving on campus he's up to 210-215 range. Another player with an incoming weight issue, Dazz Thornton, also did not play....coach said he might get in the next game if he quits eating pizza at night..(Dazz is 6-7, 280+). Coach did mention Michael Prince as doing some good things in the game which should earn him more playing time.

Coach always says he doesn't know what kind of team he'll have until they've played 10 games...then he says he'll know what they do well, what they don't do well and where they need to focus their attention.

He also praised San Jose St. coaching staff saying they were the best prepared team he'd faced in an opening game, at least for a long time.

Overall, Coach Knight seemed pleased with the effort given in the game.
