The rookie next year..

ok, assuming Portland gets one of the top 3 picks next year. And let's assume that whoever they pick (and lets not get into that debate again) is not too raw.

So for you to see that there's light at the end of the tunnel, and not just some guy holding a flashlight looking for his lunch pale...does the rookie have to start, get about 30 minutes a game and average 12-15 ppg for you to get back on the "hope train"?

I personally think that we can't have another year of our rookie being basically a non factor, our 2nd year player not being as big of a factor as we hoped, and our 3rd year player still being a non factor too much of the time.

Telfair, Webster and Outlaw (and Jack too) HAVE to have significant improvement from this year, for me to think that things aren't as dire as they seem to be. Our rookie next year, whoever that is, has to be a rookie who's in the ROTY running, as far as I care. Anything less and I'll be borderline "we're done for a long time...I have no reason to believe otherwise".

the rookie we draft should be at least halfway right to contribute next season the era of upside is almost dead or should be dead we need a proven at least halfway.

Best...comparison...ever.

And as far as the content of your post, I pretty much agree. At this point I realize we suck, and will probably not be in playoff contention for a few years. I don't know the best way to get there, but ideally for me we will do it through good drafting and giving our young guys opportunities, along with grabbing a free agent or two. The young guys have to capitalize when given the opportunities though. So, basically it'd be nice to have a guy to come in and contribute, and for SOMEBODY to show some leadership, but I don't know how likely/possible that is.

Yep... I have to agree with you Hap. There HAS to be more improvement with Webster, Jack, Telfair and Outlaw. If the draft pick comes in and gets minutes, that means one or more of our previous picks did not improve though.

Only (imo) rookie that will make a big impact next season.

it's an old carson joke, originally for Reagan and the economy.

depends on their position. Obviously (or better yet, hopefully) the team won't pick a PG. They *might* pick a SG.

I think they're most likely pick a SF, PF or a C. if the PF gets minutes in my scenario, it means that Zach is most likely gone. If the SF gest those minutes, it means that Darius is gone and Travis has progressed. If the C gets the minutes, it means that Joel is gone.

Only one of those circumstances does it bode poorly on our former draft pick. At where Travis was picked, it's not terribly bad to have him turn into a "bust".
I'm not going to lay out certain numbers the rookie has to live up to; it really depends on what position the Blazers draft for.

It's all about consistency and growth. Not one young guy has really had a solid season (due, in part, to McMillan's sometimes screwy rotation), so it would be nice for the rookie to come in and be more consistent than 15 points one game, 8 the next, 2 the next, 6 the next, etc ...

Because we don't know what position the Blazers will draft for, it's hard to put down concrete numbers on what to expect or hope for.
I dont think theres going to be inmprovement until the young guys get enough time to let them feel more confident in games. I'd like to see one game where Telfair, Jack, Webster and Outlaw got real starter minutes, 30+.

I've given up on upside. Very rarely does a player turn out to be anything after a rookie season where he couldn't contribute on a lottery team, whether he's from high school or college.
I am one to think that the young guys are actually ABLE to produce now with full consistent minutes, and I'm talking about 30+. I just think they aren't because every game is completely random as far as minutes go. I think Webster could most definitely contribute, just as long as he gets shots. That happens to be foreign to Nate, Martell can't get any shots. Same with Travis. Travis, Martell, and Sebastian RARELY get to play together and that's ****ing nuts. All in all, it solely depents on Nate and not the player. Sebastian put up pretty damn good numbers up last year when starting, he was 18 then. If these guys get minutes, believe me they can produce but they aren't given that opportunity, unfortunately.
Anyone we draft, if we keep them, can only delay our progress.

Trade the pick, or trade the draftee.

We have plenty of young talent.

Let them grow up.
All I really hope for is that one or two of our young players step up, wether the rookie we get with our lottery pick is one of them or not.
If one of our young guys steps up and has a break out year, it won't happen with all of them on the court at the same time.
viktor has been doing very good i hope he keeps it up

the veterns have been very disappointing zbo the least and joel and blake the 2nd least but theo miles and dixon yack please trade them for the love of whatever god you follow or not!

No - I don't have those expectations for any rookie from this class. I also do think we need this pick to break into our top 8 rotation.

It's still unknown whether or not we have players who can be starter quality in the NBA. Outlaw (not yet), Telfair (maybe some day), Webster (maybe some day) all have some talent - but haven't figured out what it takes to be productive every (or almost every) game. Our team now, has many players who could be our future bench players - but starters.......I'm not sure yet of any.
