Successful Scenario
Due to New Orleans being over the cap, the 25% trade rule is invoked. New Orleans had to be no more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Rashard Lewis is becoming more and more disgruntled by the year with Seattle and will opt out at the end of next year. While the Sonics have kind of rebuilt on the fly and are eager to get back to the playoffs in 2006-07. With Bob Hill playing that running style of offense, I'd be surprised if the Sonics didn't ship Lewis out in a trade to help bolster their defensive ability.

Well adding PJ Brown and Desmond Mason would be a coup for them defensively, while JR Smith still has that offensive potential to be a great replacement for Ray Allen in a few years. Not to mention this kid should have a chip on his shoulder the rest of the season.

Seattle
C - Robert Swift... Johan Petro
PF - Chris Wilcox... PJ Brown
SF - Desmond Mason... Damien Wilkins
SG - Ray Allen... JR Smith... Mickael Gelabale
PG - Luke Ridnour... Earl Watson

Plus their draft selection.

That's a playoff team in my estimation.

As for New Orleans, adding a former all-star (who's still young) in Rashard Lewis is a great move, simply because he would fit in so well with Chris Paul, David West and Kirk Snyder. Paul is a penetrator and leader, Lewis is a shooter, West is elbow jumper and low block and Snyder a slasher.

Oklahoma City

C - FA
PF - David West... Nick Collison... Brandon Bass
SF - Rashard Lewis...
SG - Kirk Snyder... Arvydas Macijauskas
PG - Chris Paul... Moochie Norris

Hornets will still have their draft selection and tons of cap room. Personally, I would draft a big man, if one is available and make a play for Nazr Mohammed or Nene to play the 5 next to David West.

I like it, Nene would be perfect for NO.

and a MLE for an experienced SF would take them to the playoffs
A highly unlikely trade. I like it from the Hornets point of view: getting Rashard Lewis would be huge, and Collison-Fortson combo should be enough to compensate for PJ Brown (although it's a bit undersized frontcourt). Nice indeed.

But I don't like from the Sonics view. They're giving away their Superstar, a great defender and a young, good PF. They do not get much in return, they're not going to be better after this trade. The chance of JR Smith becoming a Ray Allen - caliber player is more less the same as the chance of Collison becoming Karl Malone type of player. Don't count on it too much.
Wait a minute. Rashard Lewis is not a superstar. Collison is also okay, but he aint great. Wilcox is doing numbers that Collison could never dream of.

PJ Brown defensively helps the Sonics immensely and Mason is a very good energy defensive player for the Sonics as well.

JR Smith is still only 20 years old and can be a scorer in this league. Will he develop into Ray Allen? I don't know. However, he has a better chance of being a 20 ppg scorer than someone like Nick Collison does. Collison is as good as he is ever going to be.

he averages almost 22 per game. next to ray allen. i would think its harder for him to do that next to ray than it is for TP and manu to do their thing next to duncan.

rashard lewis has been an allstar. he is a tad inconsistent as a 2nd man, where u would like consistency more than brilliance. but on a bad team he could easily put up 30ppg

I like it for Seattle because Lewis is going to opt out in a year anyway and a change needs to be made. WIth the pick they can get a guy like Carney or if his stock keeps falling, maybe Gay. PJ Brown would be a great guy to have for Petro and Swift to learn from. Mason can play the SF for a season and let the draft pick adapt to the NBA.

I like for NO because Lewis gives them a solid wing scorer for Paul to get the ball to. Collison looks like he could develop into a very nice backup and Fortson is a nice big expiring who could be valuable at the deadline next year. The Hornets have lots of capspace and two picks to fill in the holes at C and backup guards, hopefully Speedy will sign back on, but he may be looking for more than a backup role.

Nice trade HKF, repped.

PJ Brown

Chris Wilcox

D Mason

Ray Allen

Luke Ridnour

Key contributors Bench

Watson, Smith, free agent big man

that would be lineup if this trade was done, however I think the Sonics will want more for lewis. personally, id trade ray allen and luck ridnour, and build around watson, wilcox, and lewis.

It would be cool if the sonics landed carney from memphis

Lewis is gone from Seattle this summer IMO and JR Smith is going to be asteal for somebody. I am glad San Antonio didn't get him for Brent Barry.
Great trade idea.

1. Rashard Lewis is not a superstar. He made the all-star team last year but that's it. He's a pretty nice scorer and a good rebounder, but he's soft.

2. Danny Fortson is not a great defender. The guy hacks and his contract sucks.

3. Collison will never be anything more than a role player.

That being said, NO/OK still has to sweeten the deal. Maybe one of their first rounders will do it.
The problem is, Lewis is a 20+ppg scorer. I'm alright with JR Smith, but that's a risk. And even if Mason can come back, I realized I don't miss the Cowboy all that much.
NO Hornets Trade:
JR Smith
1st Round Draft Pick

Houston Rockets Trade:
Juwan Howard
Luther Head

NO have to Top 20 picks so they could afford to give one off and with juwan howard they get a little bit of game and a world of experience and with luther head they get someone with a big future and he has shown glimpses of his point skills (Rookie Game). well all know JR wants out so he could easily start or even play back-up very well

a 33 year old howard whos contract is over 25 mil over 4 years isnt a trade piece the hornets want, considering we already have a solid player in D-X at that position. Luther Head isn't a bad player, but I'm sure we could pick up a player similar or better with the two first rounders we already posess.
Sorry HKF the trade that needs to happen is
J.R. Smith

8.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.1 apg in 18.3 minutes

for the Sixers 13th pick

:D
And in response to the original trade idea, I'll give my two cents considering these involve my two favorite teams and a couple players i truly enjoy watching. Rashard lewis in my mind is a star, flat out. Not a perennial all-star, not a number #1 option, and by no means a defensive stopper, but he has so many intangibles, and on his best nights can create mismatch problems better than anyone outside of Dirk. He does a decent job of reading passing lanes, and at times can come up with blocks by playing his man straight up, which is a positive. However, he is in my mind a huge liability on defense, and has been for years. With his size and length he should be an above average defender, but is just ain't the case. But his offensive prowess is really intriguing from NO's standpoint because they didn't have anyone other than rasual butler who had decent range on a consistent basis, and even he often times had trouble hitting big shots.

PJ Brown wanted to retire as a NEW ORLEANS hornet, and considering the team will be displaced next year once again, I think its totally fair that we should let him play for a contender, and if he wants his jersey retired as a hornet we can sign him after 2007. However I would like to see him go to a contender, which Seattle certainly wouldnt be next year, but thats just me putting my personal preference in and shouldn't really weigh in on my decision.

Mason played alright this year, but his game really did taper off from when he was a sixth man on the Bucks, stats aren't a tell-all thing but they really do say alot in his case. Maybe getting him back to the sonics will help him bring his game back, although him and lewis were pretty good buddies and having them swap shoes might end up being a francis/mobley love fest thing part 2(very doubtful however.)

I still haven't given up on JR Smith, and i am really going to be upset if he gets traded, but realistically if he helps us land a great player in return (shard) and a very solid backup for D-X (collison) then I don't really have much room to complain, especially since we already have a pretty young team and have a couple first rounders this offseason.

I would expect we would just eat fortsons salary and let him rot on the bench, as far as im concerned I don't ever wanna see him wearing a hornets jersey, this guy was pathetic when he suited up early on last season. He was a real integral piece in our 04-05 playoff run, but now is just garbage.
Nazr/O'Bryant
D-X/Collison
Raw Lew/Butler
Snyder/Marcus williams or ronnie brewer as a backup plan
paul/claxton

thats a decent lineup by my estimation, and a borderline playoff team. and with the absolutely amazing free agency crop and their caproom after the 06-07 season, they'll be sittin real pretty. And Seattles new lineup could certainly be enough to challenge denver for the weak NW divisions best record.
In closing, I give this trade the thumbs up, with the realization that its one of the few trades that ever gets posted that actually helps fill both teams needs and makes them better in most facets that they lack. Thumbs up on the great idea.
