Too early to assess rosters??

Assuming no major moves will be forthcoming at this point in terms of recruits/transfers, is it too early to start talking about what rosters and the upcoming season might look like next year?? (Pardon if my being “AE- hoops-news- hungry” is getting the best of me).

Answer to self: “Too early, bud.”
1 - it is way too early.
2 - this has never stopped anyone on this board before.
3 - this should not stop you now.
4 - you know you want to.

You are a wise person
Am I crazy or did no team in the league really get demonstrably worse?

I generally agree with you, but I'd like to hear from the UMBC fans before I officially sign off on this.

UNH? I know Daniels is coming back (bad advice going into the portal being a 2x transfer already forced his hand), but Nick Johnson, Kyree Brown and Matt Harasme are gone. Those guys were top scorers and minutes-getters (all over 32 mpg) for a team that finished 4th. UNH will need some other returnees and newcomers to step into the roles of the departing 3, because while Daniels might be able to win a game by himself in the league, there was a decent enough cast around him last year. So, right now, given the unknowns, UNH is demonstrably worse off than they were at season's end of this year.

I think UMBC fans have good reasons to think they're in worse shape than they were last year too. If you asked me today if I'd put them in the top 5 of the league the answer is no.

There is opportunity with 3 spots available, but Ferry has instilled no trust to make me believe it'll come together.
That's all fair. I guess Bryant lost a lot of talent, but they are operating in a different box anyways.

Add to that, a new coach. The odds are probably against the new guy coming in and knowing the teams in the league better than the old guy did.

Bryant two all-conference guys coming back (Gross-Bullock and Timberlake) + a healthy Kramer who was decent + maybe 2 decent role guys in Latimer and Edert? They still have open spots too, and we know Grasso has the ability to bring in talent, it's the other parts that weren't demonstrated well last year. They went 8-8, I think they can be 8-8 again, or maybe the coaches and players learn their lesson that the AE is not the glorified D2 league that the NEC is and the difference between glorified D2 and actual low-level D1 is meaningful and they can perform slightly better.

It's not even June so all this is completely silly and based on nothing but if you asked me to guess how things shake out thus far based on all we know at the moment it's UVM, Lowell, Binghamton, and Bryant are in "should be the upper half of the league" convo, while Maine, UMBC and Albany in the 5-7 fight, maybe surprise people and are able to break into the top half (maybe not much separating them from 3rd-4th, but more question marks than the others), then UNH, NJIT are fighting to make the playoffs.

But again, it's pre-Memorial Day I think the one impact the portal can have at this level is that you can find replacement-level guys that in theory make you no worse than before...but, it's debatable whether that makes more teams any better either, since I'd expect standings to shake out similarly to how they did last year in terms of records and games separating 3rd-7th.

I think UNH is better than you're giving credit for. Starting with all conference First team Clarence Daniels and All Rookie center Tutic. Christian Moore played a lot of minutes at guard late in the season. Jaxson Baker averaged 5.8 points per game and made 43 threes. And Rex Sunderland trey woodyard also saw a lot of minutes with Woodyard starting 15 games. Plus the coaches may be new, but they were both Division One head coaches last year. It could be an interesting year.

I don’t believe that I registered an opinion one way or the other about how UNH will be. I simply added a point to consider that could be a negative factor.

Pretty much where my head is at when it comes to the too-early rankings. Might have Bing in with the Maine, UMBC, Albany group because while they seemingly added enough to replace what they lost, it's still a question mark compared until these guys get on the court together.

in-coming Brant freshman 6'6" Aaron Davis is legit and is an elite scorer.

Talent and scoring are never Bryant's issue. They also picked up Whithers from Lowell in an inter-conference transfer recently. The St. John's kid is probably coming to the right level. While I don't think much is going to change in the way they want to play from a philosophical standpoint (being aggressive and everyone has a green light), Grasso is going to have to make some adjustments to life in the AE to translate it into more wins, but on paper, it's top 4 talent.

Herasme was an absolute net negative, but Nick Johnson was a big loss. Kyree Brown was a net neutral who played really well in the AEast Tournament but wasn't playable at times in the regular season. My guess is there won't be a sizable difference between Dior Davis [who they just brought in] and Kyree Brown at the guard spot, and I'd guess they're pretty excited about more PT from Christian Moore. The 2/3 spots are the big question for UNH right now -- Trey Woodyard showed flashes last year, but that's about it for returners .. Rex Sunderland is a 6'4 guy who they mostly played at the point. That said, they do have Naim Miller [a D2 transfer who started at MTSM] and Paul Gakmar [6'7 transfer from MCC] who will likely be favorites to step in.
