I think people dont really look at kobes Defense. I think he is very agreesive one on one and last night vs the nets he held vince to 10. Vince got so upset that he wanted to start something with kobe I think he is one of the top 15 defenders in the league and the stats dont show it
Wat u guys think

I think he is one of the best defenders, but he doesn't get after it all game long and every night. It would probably take away from his O if he did.

When Kobe locks down on defense he is easily among the top perimeter defenders in the league, however with his offensive responsibilities he rarely can do it consistently. In my opinion he needs teammate who can lock down the opposing team's best perimeter player like Jordan had in Pippen.

Kobe has been a really good defender this year, which is good to see coming off of his worst defensive season last year. He is easily a top 5 perimeter defender.

Why was Vince so pissed? Just because Kobe didn't want him to dunk the ball? lol

Man, Vince needs to grow up. He is mmmmmmmmmillllllllllllllles away from Kobe. Vince has the fame but his game is no where close to Kobe. (and this is from a Non-Kobe fan)

No. It's rated the way it should be - which is not that HIGH. If u can't consistently play good D in this league, then u're NOT a good defender. I don't care how good u're when you "put ur mind into it".

It seems he only plays D whenever the spirit moves him and thats usually when the lakers are on national tv or when he is playing another highly rated opponent.

Kobe's defense looked pretty damn good last night. Vince responded to it in the worst possible way (passively), but still, it was good.

Hes played good defense against Allen and Carter the last 2 games. But like people have said, it appears and disappears. Some games he'll put someone on lockdown, other games he'll gamble too much and his man will blow right past him.

Is hard to play good defense. I seen one player, get tons of foul calls on him of clean blocks and steals. But the refs keep blowing the whistle. Why even try, the refs make it hard. Kobe is a pretty good defender.

He's played like an All D First Teamer this year after shutting down Allen and Carter. So he's back to that form. He only really shut down Micahel Redd last season, and was very inconsistent defensively throughout the year. This year he's back to the consistent defense he played during the title runs.

Then there are really only a couple legitimate "good" defenders in the league. Guys like Kobe and Tmac have the ability and can be top notch perimeter defenders but they have too many other resposbilities to kill themselves night in and night out playing that top notch defense.

No doubt when Kobe gets up on guys defensively he is one of the best.

Kobe's D has been top notch this season. To shutdown 2 of the top 5-7 opposing players at YOUR position, while ALSO going OFF on the other end shows alot. It's those kind of things that turned Jordan into the "great" defender that he was. He played great D come 4th qtr, as Kobe does. But in those first 3 quarters, Jordan played the passing lanes and was a "rover" in Phil's defensive schemes. Just as Kobe has been this year.

If Kobe plays D against one of the "greats" at SG/SF toward the end of the year, expect Kobe to get a look at DPOY. There will be more deserving players who are simply "specialists", but Kobe will get a nod, and if he plays D like he has, deservedly so.

If he had chose to guard Kidd instead, who would guard VC? LO is WAY too slow and unathletic to guard VC, and Smush is simply not strong enough or tall enough.

I don't know about that. Kobe will always have the ability to play better defense because he has quicker lateral movement and plays defense with more intensity. McGrady has always used his length to contest shots, rather than get up in a player's face and shut him down. Kobe is also much better at guarding Ray Allen type players who can kill you off screens.
