Starting a new thread for the new season.....Hard to tell a lot from the St. Mike's scrimmage, but it looks like a couple of newcomers will help. Who will replace Larkins as a 3-point threat? From watching the game, my best guess is Gonzalez.

I really like what I saw from Paula Gonzalez and Andjela Matic. Noticed that Keira Hanson wasn't there, from the video I saw, I thought she would be able to contribute quickly. Saw the coaches telling the younger kids to shoot a few different times, seemed like they were a little timid in pulling up from 3, but overall, I liked how the team looked. Was really impressed with their passing in transition.

Albany leads most of the way to a 67-53 win over Mrrmack. Better than the opening-night loss to them last year.

Great, gritty, physical game today, UVM wins 57-51 over Siena in spite of 22 turnovers and being outrebounded. Utterback made great plays down the stretch, and Bella Vito was fantastic.
Bella was the difference, her best game as a Cat.

Utterback and Olsen missed 10 layups between the two of them. I don‘t know how you do that at this level. Utterback likes to drive, but it seems like she stops her dribble too far from the basket and then has a bad angle putting the ball off the glass. And Olsen missed several uncontested bunnies, including one with a minute to go that would have made the ending less stressful.

Women beat Marist 81-60 yesterday. Marist not as good as they have been in the past, but still. 6-3 overall. The four-game road trip will be telling to close out the non-conference. Sacred Heart and St. Francis PA aren't good, but it's away from home, so who knows. Duquense and Holy Cross will be tough to beat.

Still hoping a few of the players can get the trust to earn consistent bench minutes (I think Gonzalez and Dizon have), and when called upon, play a bigger chunk to spell the starters, because I still do worry about the Utterback/Olson/Gilwee trio playing so much that they get fatigued at the end of the year, when it'll matter more.

If ever there was a year for Vermont to win AE....this would be it. Albany and Maine are both struggling with injuries and have not played well at all.

Marist was the best game they’ve played this year. We beat Siena a week ago, but was not impressed.

I don’t get worried about minutes played. Once the conference starts, they are playing twice a week, and with all the media and team timeouts, and quarter and halftime breaks, they get plenty of rest. They are in their early 20’s in great shape. I’m not big on going 8-10 deep - give me seven good players and let’s go. 8-10 just take minutes away from your better players.

I’m not sure I agree. Building the team to be ready to deal with injuries, illness, foul trouble, etc. makes all sorts of sense to me. Having a solid set of players do you can turn to with players 8-10 seems the prudent strategy to try to build.

Of course depth is good for injuries etc., but greatly overrated. I was talking more about who actually plays. Play your best 7 most of the minutes. BTW, at the men’s level, most of the top teams don’t have a lot of depth. Duke won a national championship a few years ago with 7 scholarship players.

We have this discussion more on the men’s side of this forum. At the end of the day, UVM ends up with a 7-8 man rotation at the end of the year. And I maintain we lost vs Arkansas because their coach played his top 3-4 guys the whole game, and we used our regular rotation, taking minutes away from Shungu and Davis, when it was obvious Deloney and Fiorillo couldn’t compete vs a top-15 team.

I think they have good bench options to go to. I think the Marist and Stonehill games showed that when they have games that allow them to, they will rest their starters. There will be games where they can do that and games where the can't. I would love to be able to see more of the players on the bench to get a better feel for what they can do, but from what I've seen so far, they have talented players that will contribute in the future.

I'm curious to know what the eligibility of the seniors is going forward and whether or not they would come back for another year if eligible (which I would assume they are).

I mean, I was only asking for a 8-9 person rotation that yeah, would probably get cut down to 8 in the home stretch/playoffs. I think it's getting there, but under Kresge she has gone so so starter heavy and only played 6 people at times, that when pressed into duty, others who rarely played didn't know what to do. That's a valid critique I think. It also goes a long way in making sure there isn't roster turnover because players see roles for them.

I'm not demanding to play 9 players in a close game or anything. You go with who wins...but as HotDam said, when you have the opportunity to spell starters and get others experience, you gotta do it. Something we haven't always seen...but we also haven't always seen them be in this position either.

They're a lot of fun, because they have 4 players who can all combine in a 2-person game, to get buckets. Utterback/Kilwee on the drive and kick, or in transition.... then you get Richason and Olson in a hi-lo. Like the men's team a few years ago, when they get running and moving the ball quickly, and making that extra pass, they get a LOT of open looks.
