Quick thing I wrote about UVM's sudden European pipeline. Trying to get back into writing regularly again. Not really much I haven't already said here, but it's there.

Woodcroft named an assistant coach for Tre Kronor at the Olympics

Awesome opportunity. But am I to interpret that (unlike his coaching work in the World Juniors) he'll actually be in Beijing with the team? Curious as to how early he'll be joining the squad. That could end up being a pretty sizeable chunk of time away from UVM (not that I think we'll be playing a lot of high-leverage games in February).

IIHF women's worlds start today. UVM has 4 current players or alumnae: Current players Natálie Mlýnková and Tynka Pátková for Czechia and Sini Karjalainen for Finland, and alumna Sammy Kolowrat for the Czechs.

Czechs currently lead Denmark 3-1

UVM announcing some staff updates today.

Pat Dooley joins as equipment manager from Muskegon (USHL)
Max Gavin joins as Director of Hockey Ops from Adrian (D-III)
Drew Michals as Volunteer Assistant/Goalie Coach from Franklin Pierce (D-II)

And Patrick Sharp as a coaching advisor, which I'd be more excited for if not for the ongoing 2010 Blackhawks situation considering UVM is going through the exact same thing with the MBB program. Probably unfair to Pat, but it is what it is.

I'm assuming the Sharp role is like what Babcock did last year, being able to advise virtually/from afar with maybe occasionally swinging through Burlington.

I'm glad to see him on board because (as an admitted outsider) Sharp always seemed to be the highest profile alum who didn't really feel connected to this program. On a surface level, anyway. He was only here 2 years...2 pretty terrible years in terms of on-ice team performance. It didn't ever feel like UVM was an integral part of his story, and that he succeeded in spite of his time here, not necessarily because of it (you could probably draw some emerging parallels to Ross Colton). So to see him come back as an alum and invest his time in this program is great for the team, and great for Woodcroft when it comes to selling this team, because even if his time in BTV wasn't really successful, he's the kind of post-Marty success story the UVM staff should promote.

Already outdated as another European commits to UVM: Ralfs Bergmanis of USHL Sioux City (teammates with fellow UVM commit Axel Mangbo). Latvian.

Fun exhibition game last night from what I was able to watch! of the new guys i think i liked Buyalsky, Stucker, and Babichuk the most
I didn't get to watch, but I saw they went down 2-0 and thought welp. Nice to see they came back, even in an exhibition...it's a D1 team after all. My feeling is if they manage to win 8-10 games total this year that's a victory. Looking at their schedule it's doable. If they get a split or take a point with Colgate that's a positive sign. It's going to be about making sure they're getting points against the "should be getting points" teams against, then stealing a couple against those they shouldn't. Still, this is really the real year one as far as I'm concerned so there are going to be a lot more downs than ups.

That's about where I'm at, tbh. There's so much I don't know about this group but I'm excited to learn lol. Keeping my expectations low but hopes high.

On one end: getting swept at home sucks. No doubt about that.
On the other: UVM was probably unlucky to get swept, ran into two hot goalies and made a few young team mistakes, and on Friday Carriere had an off night.

I listened to parts of the games this weekend on the radio. I thought the new play-by-play guy Adam LeFleur was pretty good. Clearly knows hockey well and had good timing/rhythm that worked with the flow of the game. A good follow-up to Michael Lehr.

Those World Junior events got canceled so the guys who were playing in them and coaches coaching, should be back. It'll be interesting to see how its handled with Woodcroft going to Beijing for the Olympics and what happens if he has to quarantine for a month or whatever it is after if he were to test positive. That, and no NHL players going so maybe Ryan Gunderson gets to go to the Olympics again? He's still playing in Europe.

I saw this today, WCAX is putting some men's and women's hockey games on TV: How to watch Hockey Night in Vermont

I'll be curious how that actually goes and if they're just grabbing the feed or if they're going to actually do some level of production. UVM and Hockey East's feeds of games let's just say leave a lot to be desired in terms of quality. If you go from watching a reasonably streamlined/put together ESPN/AE basketball stream to this, it's an adjustment.

Also, Dovar Tinling, the player who came as a freshman at 17 returned to junior hockey. He didn't play well/live up to expectations so it probably won't matter for this year's version of the team which is still a big work in progress/not very good. It's also not fully healthy as I understand it.
