Interesting development in the Rice community. The principal just announced that he will be leaving Rice. He had announced in November that he was planning to stay on for the second year of his contract. I tend to think that his leaving was not his choice. It's also pretty likely that it may have had something to do with how the case with the 3 bball players was handled.

Stay tuned, there will undoubtedly be more to this story...

The principal, who was only appointed as an interim, lives 4 hours away from his family and wrote a letter to the faculty that the distance was taking its toll on his family. At this point, it's best to take him at his word before trying to work it into some larger conspiracy.

(Editing to add: this guy is the 3rd principal the school has had since 2016. Things haven't been consistent up there in recent years.)

From a close source, I’ve heard the principal has handled the case very poorly, and has received a plethora of backlash from multiple people about the situation. Seems like a one sided story so far, not sure if it’s the right one.

Rice HS having administrative leadership issues? Unfortunately not much of a surprise of late. This happened under the last principal's watch, so what transpired in regard to this could be true, but seems unlikely that there will be a straight answer to the public:

Either way, wherever the blame/cause may lie, the poster who appears to have a vested interest in updating a mostly apathetic audience on all of this is pulling a pretty interesting about-face. Especially given that they had this to say directly to me in the coaching carousel thread when discussing coach misconduct (Chris Beard being arrested for domestic violence): Coaching Carousel 2023

It's almost like you revel in the misfortunes of others.

Thankfully this is an an anonymous message board so no one can point out the lowest points in your life.

It seems as though one of student athletes appealed his suspension to the Superintendent and it was upheld, so that was a bit surprising.

If any journalist types were so inclined, they could find a pretty interesting story around the Principal, his hiring, background and abrupt departure...

Sawyer Ramey, SR guard from Fair Haven, was named Gatorade POY...

Good point guard, handled the ball well from what little I've seen of him. Could probably find a decent D-3 home if that's something he's interested in.

I know we talk mostly boys here, but Sabine Brueck from North Country won the girls Gatorade POY. Only a sophomore, she can really play. Curious to see what her game looks like over the next 2 years, because in my amateur opinion she could be a D-1 player.

The coaches association also announced the "Dream Dozen" underclassmen for boys and girls, which somewhere along the way became the Dream Two Dozen because they split up Divisions 1&2 and Divisions 3&4. A couple of names to maybe keep an eye on in that D1&2 boys group...

I saw CVU won the D1 state championship; and I think I read it's their first ever state championship? Wow, would not have guessed that given their size.

That being said, CVU was not strong in boys hoops when I was growing up (boys soccer definitely)

This is just anecdotal, because lord knows I don't know the origin of every player ever. But when you consider that two schools like CVU and SB, both fairly sizeable schools with good athletic backgrounds, have been historically mediocre at boys hoop I think some of that goes back to Rice. I'm sure they've collected their fair share of South Burlington, Shelburne, Williston kids over the years, enough to put a dent into CVU and SB's programs.

Currently, it seems Rice has pulled quality players from Burlington, which I think is one of a couple factors you can point to when you look at how BHS has fallen off in recent years.

Outside of Rice, how many Chittenden county high schools have actually been dominant in terms of championships? It seems like basketball is bigger at schools like St J, Rutland, etc. Sometimes we need to take our Chittenden County glasses off and recognize that the county only accounts for 1/4 of the state‘s overall population.

When I was I junior high school and then prob Fr/So year of high school I would say top talent in the state was 50/50 Chittenden County/So. Vermont. These were players I remember watching at Aud that were really, really good:

Curt Crosby, Darnell Artt-Arlington
Joel Carey- Woodstock
Josh Farnsworth, Derek Southard- Windsor (those Windsor teams were scoring like 90ppg at the time)

I think around that time Scott Reed from Fair Haven was at UVM, and maybe another from So, VT(?)

Then, Josh Albee Bellows Falls

By the time I was a senior, save for Todd Roberts- Fair Haven/St. Mike's (might be only player I know that chose St Mikes over UVM at the time), VT HS basketball was dominated by Chittenden County /Metro conference + St. J and seems like that's been case ever since, save for a few Brattleboro or Mt Anthony kids every 5 years or so.

Division 1 Boys Basketball Championships, all-time:

Burlington: 21
Rice: 18
Spaulding: 12
Mt. Anthony: 8
Rutland: 8
Montpelier: 5
Mt. Mansfield: 4
Springfield: 4
St. Johnsbury: 4
Essex: 3
MSJ: 3
Bennington Catholic: 2
BFA-St. Albans: 2
Brattleboro: 2
CVU: 1
Hartford: 1
Middlebury: 1
Windsor: 1

Obviously, this list includes a lot of schools who are no longer D-1 because they won championships in the 40s or whatever, and demographics have changed just a little since then.

The one caveat I would add to your point about population: regardless of what that number is, 7/13 schools currently in D-1 are in Chittenden County, so more than half of the schools playing for the big school title are there. But I think the initial observation stems from: look at schools that tend to be so good at so many other sports. Isn't it interesting/curious/worth noticing that they haven't had success in boys basketball. And maybe the answer stems from just that: those other schools have a lot of other offerings, and it's not as much of a youth sports cultural priority as other sports. But it is just a little surprising that CVU only won its first this year, and SBHS has never won (and only made the finals for the 2nd time in 2021).
