In a move that will be a huge disappointment to “Red Sox Nation,” catcher Victor Martinez has apparently decided to leave Boston and sign a free-agent contract with the Detroit Tigers.

The Boston Herald has more:

A major-league source has confirmed a report out of Venezuela today that Martinez is on the verge of signing a four-year, $50 million contract with the Detroit Tigers, leaving the Red Sox without a clear-cut starting catcher.

The Tigers apparently put more cash on the table than the Red Sox, Orioles, and White Sox.

Despite a stint on the DL, Martinez–who also spent time at first base and as a DH–batted .302 with 20 home runs and 79 RBI.
I imagine the Red Sox will be trying to acquire Mike Napoli again.
