Police have a men's Badger basketball player in custody on tentative battery charges.

Maurie "Boo" Wade, 19, of Milwaukee, is a guard and considered to be a key player on the team. The university said Wednesday afternoon Wade is suspended from the team for violating the Wisconsin Student-Athlete Discipline Policy.

University officials said Wade will need to decide if he wishes to appeal the suspension. If Wade does not pursue an appeal, the suspension from competition and games will continue until any charges have been addressed by the legal system, officials said.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound sophomore is an arts major. In high school, he led Milwaukee Vincent to a 23-1 record and was second-team all-state selection by the Associated Press.

The Badgers will face the Gophers tonight with out Wade. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Kohl Center.

The sad thing about this is that all student-athletes had to attend a mandatory hour-and-a-half meeting dealing with this exact topic on the same day this arrest happened. So apparently after this meeting dealing with how student-athletes are supposed to conduct themselves around members of the opposite sex, he went out and smacked some girl around a couple times. Great. Just what this university needs. I can't even count the number of incidents we've had with football players and this kind of behavior, and now athletes from other sports are engaging in the same type of behavior.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin guard Maurice ``Boo'' Wade was charged Wednesday with choking a woman.

He is to appear in court Thursday on the misdemeanor battery charge.

His arrest violated school policy and he was suspended from the basketball team. He missed two games but the suspension was lifted Monday night by an appeals committee.

He was expected to play for 17th-ranked Badgers at Iowa on Wednesday night.

A 19-year-old woman accused Wade of attacking her last week in the bathroom of an off-campus house, police said. She said the player choked her twice. She was treated at a hospital and released.

Wade has been averaging 7 points and 32 minutes a game.
