Lakers’ loss brings joy to Jazz fans

There’s a limit to how much Jazz fans could celebrate the meltdown of the Los Angeles Lakers, considering their own team had nothing to do with it.

Yet even if the Dallas Mavericks’ sweep of the Lakers in the Western Conference playoffs could not undo what the Lakers did to the Jazz the previous three years, it certainly brought some happiness to Jazzland.

Rejoicing in the misery of others may be wrong, but try telling that to those who delighted in that Mother’s Day Massacre.

“No self-respecting Jazz fan can feel anything but absolute joy in watching the Lakers totally lose their composure and go down in flames,” said Riley Risto, of Midway.

“With the Lakers out, I can enjoy the playoffs with a smile on my face,” said Jon Aubrey, of South Jordan.

There is one important distinction in this historical study, however. In 1996, when two-time defending champion Houston was swept out of the playoffs, the Jazz were positioned to take advantage of the opening. They reached Game 7 of the Western Conference finals that year and played in the NBA Finals each of the next two seasons.

Glad they can be happy about something.
