I saw another player with a similar career arc hit the portal, and my only thought is that someone thinks there's a court ruling out there somewhere that will nuke the "Only 4 years of eligibility" rule, and they want to be around if/when it happens. Because under no conventional circumstance should Bryce Johnson have eligibility left.

Yea its really interesting how this all works, I am personally confused by it all. Let's see what happens and if in fact his transfer goes through.

I felt the same way about Steven Ashworth - like he basically played 5 years. Maybe there is service time manipulation that we see in baseball.

In Ashworth's case his first year was 2021, which was considered a non-counting year for players. So technically his eligibility clock started in the 21-22 season. We've flushed most of those players out of the system at this point, though there's still a few who are trying to hang on!

But with Johnson, he played what would be considered 4 counting seasons (17 games played in 2024 is...or at least should be...way too many to consider getting a waiver for that season). Judicial action would seemingly be his only road here.

Ashworth had a COVID waiver, though. Johnson doesn't qualify for any medical waiver and was not a COVID-era player.

Don't get me wrong - would love to see him play in a higher conference, but it's truly baffling.

Welcoming Evan Morton and DJ Armstrong to UMBC! Hoping to learn more about these players as they come to campus.

Evan Morton - East Stroudsburg University

Decent # of Mid-Majors that had interest

DJ Armstrong - The University of Texas Permian Basin

How does Johnson have eligibility?, or how would he play at Kentucky?

6'10/235 forward José Roberto Tanchyn from Palm Beach Atlantic (D2).

Averaged 9.4 PPG and 6.7 RPG in 22 minutes per night. Scored in double figures 9 of his last 12, including a 25 point outing against St. Leo.

I like this get from an initial glance.

Possible transfer visiting soon - averaged 13.1 PPG and 4.0 RPG in JUCO. A 43% 3 point shooter on 5.2 attempts per night.

Had committed to D1 UTRGV, but UMBC is much closer to his JUCO home in PA. I'd be surprised if he doesn't commit. Great size and pops nicely in film.

For a 6' 10" guy, he moves pretty well. After not having a big men down the middle last year, this feels like a nice breath of fresh air.

So far, so good in terms of the recruits coming in. More work to be done though.

Agree - he plays a bit smaller than 6'10 it seems in his highlight package, but can be a true frontcourt big with a nose for the basket.

Really like what I've seen from Santos and am hoping we can lock him up. A 6'8 wing with length and a strong 3 ball is an intriguing combo at this level (and would have 3 years of eligibility).

Santos and Armstrong (6'4, veteran wing with muscle) woul certainly raise our floor defensively.
