My understanding of Matt Brown's reporting on this was, yes there is a moratorium in place. And yes, a school must have documented proof of consideration by a D-I conference, however the form and content was not defined by the NCAA and these letters are non-binding.

He also reported that he only knows about those 3 schools having a "letter." Rumors here and elsewhere was that Bentley AD had met with the NEC. So while a Bentley letter has not been reported yet, is it possible that they have one and it just has not been made public until/unless an offer is actually extended and accepted?
Sorry, D96 is correct. Going back to Matt Brown's blog, the school had to file that "letter" with the NCAA (which Bentley apparently did not do).

That being said, he still hedges his bets by using the qualifiers "current understanding" and goes on to say "I’m not hearing, or expecting to hear, anything about any schools from say, the NE-10, GLIAC, GAC or elsewhere."

So unless there is breaking news outside of this reporting, it is unlikely we will have any D-II such as Bentley come out of our region.

I wonder since UCSD is joining the WCC, will UC Irvine, UCSB and others consider branching off?

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if UC Riverside and Cal Poly dropped from D1 at some point

But then again, I could just be speaking random stuff right now

We talk a lot about who might join the AE. Which three schools are the most likely to leave the AE in the coming years?

A few years ago, Albany to the CAA was at the top of the list, but all that seems to be dead at this point.

I can't immediately think of any of our members that are high risk right now.

The biggest flights risks are the football playing schools. That being said….I don’t think anything is imminent at this time. None of them are going FBS as it is currently set up. The CAA is always going to be a conference to watch however the CAA now feels like AE with more travel.

I don't think any of these will happen, but these make some sense:

Albany - CAA fits like a glove alongside SBU, Monmouth, Towson.
Binghamton - Has the academics and recent investment to look Patriot-ish. There is no room at the inn, but this is likely where they aspire to be.
UMBC - It would be a step back, but could they go back to a Big South? Look away from the Northeast and look to growing region in the South. They are closer to Longwood, Radford, High Point than every AE school, but NJIT. The rest of the league is NC/SC.

This is as accurate as it gets. The only obvious caveat is if the CAA north schools break and if they do, the AE would likely lose all football playing schools, at a minimum. All far off, however.

The question then becomes.....what does that look like and who does it include?

Northeastern
Stony Brook
Hofstra
Monmouth
Drexel
Towson

Add:

Albany
Bryant
New Hampshire
Maine

Are they happy at 10 or do they want to add 2 more with basketball pedigree to get to 12?

UMBC
Vermont

"CAA 12.0" (North to South)

Maine
UNH
Vermont
Northeastern
Bryant
Albany

Stony Brook
Hofstra
Monmouth
Drexel
Towson
UMBC

This seems like a pretty decent league.....seems good from a travel/partner standpoint. Not sure how Northeastern & Stony Brook feel about this but do they have other options or conferences knocking down their doors? Binghamton will land somewhere......they have the academic and facility pedigree to be a very attractive add. NJIT & UMass-Lowell end up in the NEC under this scenario.

Assuming that Campbell, Elon, NC A&T and Hampton are gone from CAA Football......that then becomes:

Maine
UNH
URI
Bryant
Sacred Heart
Albany
Stony Brook
Monmouth
Towson

9 teams......round robin schedule.....I think that everyone could live with that.

Just add
SHU
Monmouth
SBU
Towson
Northeastern.

AE goes to 14
North 7 “South” 7
UNH Towson
Maine UMBC
Vermont Monmouth
UML NJIT
Albany SBU
Northeastern SHU
Bryant Binghamton

Football has 9. Expand ESPN+ package to add football. Call it a day… I feel like it’s trending this way…. Slowly.

Drexel and Hofstra can go chill with QU and FU in the MAAC.

This makes a ton of sense!

Ya know what?

The moment more FCS teams join FBS is the moment I say screw it to dividing the FBS and FCS.

We create two separate playoff systems for the big boys and little guys

Make conferences equally matched or whatever and just make CFB not money hungry anymore

Or just get rid of the bottom tier G5 schools I guess

Ummm. What?! That exists today
BUT..... Conference Relegation. Create a rating system, the top two conference eligible for FBS playoffs the bottom two drop to FCS playoffs. I know it isn't real and won't happen....

Honestly here's a crazy idea from me.

Group of 5 Teams/FCS Reshuffle

We swap around teams like Georgia State, Delaware and UL Monroe and replace them with FBS ready teams with better facilities and stuff (because that rule should really be enforced)

There will be a Group of 5/FCS playoff

Buffalo, Delaware, UMass, Charlotte and Georgia State can join the CAA Football League or even better the CAA and America East split their teams up into separate conferences

Youngstown State goes to MAC

Most Midwest OVC teams can join the MVFC

Southern OVC teams merge with Big South and Eastern UAC teams for Atlantic Sun

Sun Belt and Conference USA will have 24 of the most FBS ready southern programs.

Western Kentucky
Middle Tennessee
James Madison
Old Dominion
Liberty
Marshall
App State
East Carolina
Georgia Southern
FAU
Troy
South Alabama
UAB
Jacksonville State
Southern Mississippi
Louisiana
Louisiana Tech
Arkansas State
Texas State
UTSA
North Texas
Tulsa

Final 2 spots are a toss up between Kennesaw State, Sam Houston State and Eastern Kentucky

Tarleton State can go to the MWC

Oh yeah and there's a new Power 7 format with the Big East and WAC being revived

No Independents

Anyways fever dream over, back to reality :)
