They'll get move ups. North Alabama has been sniffing around for a D-I conference for years. Florida has a million schools like U.Tampa, Rollins, Ave Maria, Southeastern, Broward, etc. Especially now that for profit schools are in play.

The A-Sun is like the A-East, there are always break glass in case of emergency schools around.
If I were a school president or AD, there's no way I'd want to be associated with a for-profit school in my conference.

Especially considering most of them are terrible schools academically.

Looks like the WAC, which has to be the biggest loser from all the conference shake-ups, is not content with 8 and looking to get back up to 10 sooner rather than later. The commish:

"Eight is not a comfortable number," Hurd said at the WAC Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. "I'm very happy with where we are as a league today. When I say happy, I mean we have great support from our board of directors for the direction we're headed, great support from our administrators. That doesn't mean that we don't have to make more improvement. What it means is our progress to date has been good.

"Ten is a much more comfortable number, it's a much more workable number. But, we're not there yet and we need to get there in the relative near future."
As the journalist notes, the WAC lost members to all sorts of leagues and will most likely be looking to schools that aspire to move up to D-I membership.

All colleges are for profit, some are just more honest about it.
Clever quip. That's not the point. These for-profit colleges don't have to be certified by governing bodies or actually do any real teaching.

Look at all the degrees people have from BS colleges that don't mean anything because the college was a sham.

Do you want to be associated with a school like that? I don't.

Not D-I but rumors are abounding that the University of New England (Biddeford, ME) is going to move up to D-II.

Be interesting to see what they do with hockey.
Can't hockey continue to play DIII schools but no national championship eligibility now?

Correct. Or they could offer scholarships and play up to D-I. Atlantic Hockey has an odd number. Southern Maine could certainly support a team. Presumably a D-II UNE would be in the Northeast 10 with Bentley, AIC and Merrimack who do play up, but also Franklin Pierce, SNHU, Assumption, St. A's, St. Mike's and Stonehill who do not.

I thought the time ran out to where you can play up in one sport, no? Weren't the DIII play-up schools grandfathered in?

There's no D-II hockey championships, so they have the option

20.8.2 Division II Options When No Division II Championship Is Conducted. An active member institution that holds membership in Division II is eligible to compete in the Division I championship in those sports for which no championship is conducted in Division II. The Division II institution shall declare its intention to compete by June 1. This declaration of intent shall be effective for a minimum of three years. (Revised: 1/10/91 effective 9/1/92)
20.8.2.1 Participation in Division I Championship. To be eligible for the Division I championship in such a sport, the Division II member institution is required to meet all Division I institutional and individual eligibility requirements and may use Division I financial aid limitations in that sport as permitted under Bylaw 20.9.1.1. (Revised: 1/10/91 effective 9/1/92)

Not surprised about UNE.....they are being very aggressive about everything that they do. Southern Maine is ripe for a D-2 sports program.......it's pretty incredible that there hasn't been one yet in the state. The other school that I could see going D-2 someday is Husson.

Husson going D-II with D-I hockey (playing at the CIC???) would really rattle some cages in Orono. Probably for the better.

Agreed about UNE and Husson...the amount of investment in UNE is pretty impressive. Husson also seems to have had some decent amount of momentum for a while now. Do they have much more room for expansion? I know they are pretty locked in with borders there.

moving up to d2 in hockey would be the worst idea ever I feel so bad for St Mikes who does d2 hockey one of only 4 schools that do and only have the NE10 title that sucks and here it is especially bad considersing that there is great d3 hockey with Norwich Middlebury Castleston and Plattsburg State
Also d2 in new england means NE10 and they already have 14 memebers some which probably better of in d3
These day to me if you move to d2 it is because you want to be d1 that is just what I think feel it is gonna be d1 and d3 eventually d2 will see either worthy teams move up to d1 or others go down to d3

I wouldn't be shocked if UNE has D-I aspirations.
I bet they do. Jack McDonald, the Quinnipiac AD, who led the exponential growth of the QU athletic program from D-II to the NEC to the MAAC, and got their arena built, will retire on June 30 to take the same position at UNE.

BTW - QU hired Duquesne AD Greg Amodio. Not bad for them to steal a current athletic director from an A-10 school.

Nice info.

I'm beginning to think that the Q has their sights on the A-10.

I'm still hoping for the eventual break-up of the CAA.......but as long as JMU is still there the CAA will continue to exist.
