I know that this varies with different players, but in general. At what age do you think a player starts his prime? What age does he have his peak year? And what age does the peak end, and the player starts to drop off? And if you think it varies by position, then how so?

I'd guess in general a prime starts about 27. Peaking at 29, and ending at about 31.

around 27-32

but that varies...as I watch KG it will be interesting to see what happens to him the next 5 years...

becuase I hear all the time people speak about how Kobe or McGrady haven't reached their prime.....but these guys have been playing 82 game seasons since age 17....

what kind of wear and tear does that have on the body....so im asking what is the prime age for guys who come straight out of high school???

I think T-Mac this coming season will enter his prime. And Kobe, I think he's been in his the past 2 years, and it's still going. As for KG, I'm also interested to see what happens. You bring up a good point though, is a prime at different ages for straight from HS kids?

Prime is reached at 27. Early bloomers may prime at 25. Only very elite athletes maintain true prime past 30. Usually you will start to see modest declines at 30. This is true for basketball, baseball and hockey. Football varies greatly by position; for example, prime for running backs is early, QBs and offensive linemen is late.

There are exceptions, but this hold remarkably true. Check it out whenever you are looking at the career records of athletes.

Hasn't LBJ already reached his prime? I mean, 27 points, 7 boards and 7 assists looks like a prime too me. I know some may disagree and say that he'll put up better numbers but to put up +25 points, 7 boards, 7 assists to go along with two steals is about the best "prime" numbers you can get. He might have Jordan like year with like 30 points, 8 boards, 8 assists but we'd have to wait and see. James is definitely an excellent player, but his numbers may not be better than they are right now. Maybe points could go up to 30-35, but would that sacrifice an assist or two?

Kobe, Tmac and KG are in their primes. They've been in the league long enough to develop their games to where at 25 they have the same type of savvy as 27-28 year old players who came out of college.

Anyway, it varies for different players. Guys like Kobe, Garnett, or Tmac are in their primes at 26 or 27. But imo, Lebron's is going to come a lot sooner. The mental aspect of his game has a maturity that other high schoolers didn't develop until later on, and unlike guys like Kobe or Garnett. Hes physically ready as any 4 year college player, hes just 4 years younger.

For overall prime, I'd even go a little past 30. It will be intertesting to see when the first bunch of HS-NBA leapers (KG, Kobe, TMac) will start their declines.
They won't decline anytime soon but I don't think they'll improve either. I think they're at their respective peaks right now and will continue to put up great numbers for another 4-5 years. I can only see them making marginal improvements.
