All the talk about revenues/expenses led me to find this site:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/ncaa-finances.htm

It's from 2009-10. Most AE schools aren't losing too much money relatively speaking, certainly not making much if in the black.

What I found really interesting is the disparity in revenue from ticket sales between the member schools.

Here it is:

UNH $2.1 million
Vermont $1.4M
Maine $1.3M
Binghamton $416K
Albany $171K
Stony Brook $145K
UMBC $49K

(BU & UNH private)

UVM BBall sells out quite a bit (or did) and still does occasionally, but more seats in the Gutt (4035 vs 3266 in Patrick) and I'd guess they can charge more for hockey, no? What do hockey tickets go for, and is there different prices for different sections? I don't even know.

I've actually never been to a UVM hockey game at the Gutt in my life. Only time I've set foot in Gutterson was for Vermont HS hockey finals and Intramural Broomball.

There's a lot of interesting data in there...

*Vermont actually spent more in travel than Maine did

*Only Bing and UMBC spend less money recruiting than Vermont does

*Albany spent the most on recruiting- then SBU, then Maine, then UNH.

*Under the line item "Direct State Support" it said SBU got $6 million. UNH it says 31K and everyone else says $0. (Is that right? It's right for Vermont lol)

*Bing's severance payment line item says $209K. That will increase by $1M for 2010-11 ;)

*Guarantees (Football schools): Maine close to $900K, UNH $500K, SBU $350K, Albany $340K

*Everyone needs to follow UNH's lead and learn from them in the Royalties, Licensing, Advertisements, and Sponsorships category- they bring in $1.5M for that. No wonder Scarano is looking for the AE commissioner, he knows what he's doing in that area. UNH is run pretty well operationally speaking.

When you combine % of revenue from "Student Fees" and "Direct Institutional Support" for just about every school in the conference makes up a lot. The revenues the schools bring in from actually operating is pretty meager.

It's interesting to see the ticketing and licensing/sponsorships at places like UConn, Texas, Florida, etc

This is real interesting, Vermont actually pays its coaches more than the SUNYS pays theirs-and Maine, and we don't have football coaches to pay. I wonder where it's all going, because we grossly underpaid the best coach the school had- it's sure not going to men's basketball, considering our coach makes much less than the SUNYS pay their mens hoops head coach.

If the freaking Lax coaches make more than enough for beer money I'll be pissed! :)

UNH pays its coaches the most- about $1 million more than everyone else. Getting some good returns in hockey and football I guess.

Well, remember all this stuff is online for UVM.

http://www.uvm.edu/~isis/sr/sr10.pdf

Stray observations:
- Guessing the new men's basketball staff would be compensated similarly as the last staff. (~$325k in base salary for the entire staff)
- The top assistant on the women's basketball (Mike Terry) is paid more than four head coaches, and would be the second highest paid on the men's staff. He makes 68k a year. The top assistant for men's hockey makes more than him (70k), which I'd expect.

- The men's Lax coach makes 72k

The USA Today stats were for the 2009-10 season, not last year, so the Maine-FSU scenario would not be accounted for in the guarantee money. At any rate, Maine did not end up getting a double payout on the game. The contract stipulated that if FSU pulled out of the game, they had to find a suitable FCS matchup for Maine, with a similar payout, as a replacement. If none was found, they would pay Maine double the original guarantee, which was $450,000.

Syracuse stepped up and offered Maine $300,000 to come to the Carrier Dome for the second season in a row and that satisfied the terms of the contract. FSU was off the hook.

How much of a raise did Markwood get to jump ship to UVM?
I don't know what Markwood was getting paid at Maine, but you'll be able to go to this website (once it's updated) to see what Markwood makes at UVM.

http://www.uvm.edu/~isis/sr/sr10.pdf

Becker made $48K in his ac role and Haj Turner made $53K- so I'd guess something in that range(?) since Markwood was hired as a senior assistant coach
